View Full Version : Stupid question: 4x54 T5 vs 1 175w MH, which uses more electricity?

I'm currently running a single 175w MH with IceCap Ballast, it has work well.
Most of my corals are located in one spot so light coverage hasn't been that much of a problem.

I'm looking to spread the corals out more to the ends of the tank so I'm thinking of getting a set of 4x54 T5 for better light coverage. How much more electricity would I be using if I switch to a set of 4x54 T5s?

Many Thanks,

Beng

So nominal it isn't worth calculating, ~1/2 amp differenece.

If you use the Universal/Tek ballasts the actual draw per bulb is 60w so 60X4 = 240 actual input watts. You would have to measure your 175W ballast watt input with your bulb combination ( as it will vary slightly by bulb ) but I know it is something more than just 175W probably around 190W or so.

A difference or 50W at 12 hours a day doesn't even add up to a dollar a month on your electric bill if thats what your worried about.

As usual, Thank you David. You make everything so clear.
