hey My skimmer currently has a sedra 5000 on it and it is not big enough.

pluss it heats up the water way to much so that 77.3 is the stable point nowinstead of 73 like i want it. anyway I need an external needlewheel pump that runs cooler and pushes more water and air than the sedra. suggestions?

my chamber is 8" by 15" plus the neckand cup. it is fed by an 802 ph and has a gate valve.

why dont you just do an ocean runner instead?

size or model number?

I need somthing that will not act as a heater for the tank.

What is your volumne of water ? I have never known sedra NW pumps as being as significant source of heater as you describe unless your talking a small volume of water.

40 breeder plus about 30 gal in the sump.

I measured my sedra500 needle wheel and it runs 43watts. While I'm sure there are pumps that are more effecient but likely not going to find one that will be significantly less wattage ( maybe 10w or best case 20w ) to reduce the heat enough to matter.

sounds like you have configured as a reciculating skimmer , is the pump submersed or above the water line ? This will have some effect on heat. If not recirculating consider converting the skimmer to a recirculating so that pump is out of the water.

Have you done the meshwheel mod yet ? when I did the amount of air pulling was very significant. For sure will give you the performance boost. Also on my tank in the winter time where ambient air temps are 65 in the basement the 350W heater was no longer able to keep up. Prior to the mesh the heater had no problems. So as long as your ambient temp of your house is 73 or cooler the added air likely help compensate for the pump heat.

Whats the wattage draw on a 802 powerhead ? May save a little heat/wattage by going with a MJ 600 or 400 feed pump.

What other pumps/circulation do you have on the tank ? Could you get more bang by making them more watt efficient or running external vs. just looking at the skimmer pump ?

That's all I can really think of.....
