Yeah. Trouble is so many get labeled generically as a S. Elegans but likely not. I don't even know if mine is truely one or not.
I spend a couple of years on the look out locally for a nice brightly yellow one as many sold aren't near as bright. It's one of those corals I really don't trust to buy online for fear it looks different than pictured. I have tried a couple mail order in the past and when got it not as brightly yellow as I was looking for.
I've had for over 2 years. Mine has been relatively slow growing maybe an 1" in diameter increase per year. Responds very well to T5s and MH, but was very lack luster under VHOs.
I've have been gearing myself up for making a few nano sized frags of it but haven't quite gotten the nerve. I know of a personal friend in Dallas that had/has one that was spectactular and when went to frag it nearly lost all of it but best I know he didn't loose then entire colony.
This is one coral that I like better than 90% or all acros/Sps. Truely one of my favs.....

I was going to order one through Dr. Foster and Smith. I have an Iwaki 20 RLT for a return pump and a maxi mod in a 58 gallon tank, so I should have some pretty good flow, and running a single XM 20k 250w halide over the tank!
Next addition is a 2 channel doser and trying out the two part formula made with reagent grade ingredients so I do not have ammonia and phosphate issues.

Be warned with mailorder: I tried the Drs. once and wasn't really an elgans. At least not the true bananna yellow I wanted. So don't be too disapointed if you just get a yellowish toadstool.
As long as you use the recommended brands, ammonia is not an issue. What amount of ammonia that may be present gets consumed in a matter of minutes in a tank with adequate filtration. Can't speak about the phosphates but I haven't noticed any issues ( started a year ago Jan. ) as long as using Dow and Dead sea incredients. The Dow actually tested lower in ammonia that Kent's turbo calcium.

Considering their description says S. Elegans, they will be getting a phone call if it is not and I will be getting a refund!

S. Elegans is used so generically to describe a coral you probably will end up with the tan/yellow toadstool that's why I ended up just waiting until I found one locally that I really like. Tried twice ( different vendors ) and was disappointed both times.
I'll be interested to hear how end works out.

I have one that I am not sure if it is elegans. It is a nice beautiful yellow. It dosen't seem to grow very much. When I have the meeting at my house maybe someone can ID it for me

Loralie, me too. slow grower, if lucky about 1 inch per year for me. But way more attractive than most called by the same name. I'll take the looks anyday.....

Well it is not canary yellow, but we shall see as time goes on with water quality and good flow. Some of the polyps are out, definately acclimating to the tank. The thing will be huge!

The first pic is the one I had gotten from them years ago. It was under 175W mh with actinics.
The second one is the one I bought locally after giving up on mailorder for a nice one. It is under T5s but stayed pretty bright yellow under MH, VHO, and T5s no significant coloration changes under different lighting. VHO being the dullest but still pretty bright yellow.
Only way I'd every try mailorder for one again would be from a WYSIWYG site.

It very possible. I've seen some leather that definately look died so it wouldn't surprise me.......

David, mine looks like the one in the second pic. Mine is bright yellow as well. What conditions to you have yours in? Mine is under 4-160W VHO and 2 250W Halides. It is in medium flow. Sometimes it will go a couple of days with no polyp extension. I have had it for about 20 months. Like I said in the previous post, it grows very slow.

It's under T5s. I've had for a couple of years as well. Mine doesn't really go through many anti-polyps stages and never sheds. It's got pretty good random flow though. Agree slow grower especially for being a softy.
