do powerheads/pumps add? I just ordered a hydor koralia to replace an aqua clear 70, and I'm wondering if there will be a reduction of the heat in the tank. Also, I'm open to ways to drop the heat w/o a chiller, I've got a fan going, and I think I might move the light cycle earlier with a small NO for viewing later in the day when it's hot. if you get a clip on fan and mount it so it is pointing down across the sump it will help cool the tank.

no real "sump" per se. I have a room fan blowing across the display, albeit haphazardly. I will probably add a clip or two tomorrow.

When I had the 320g tank with 5X400W MH on it, I started my light cycle at 5pm instead of in the morning so that I could take advantage of the cool outdoor air during the night time. Usually the tank didn't start getting warm until after sundown.

When trying to figure out how much heat a submersible pump will generate, just look at the wattage consumption of the pump. The wattage consumption is the same as if it is the wattage rating of a heater, so if a pump uses 30 watts of power, then it is acting like a 30 watt heater.

Wes, what kind of powerheads are you running? ie. maxijets, seios, tunzes...

I suppose that's a little too intuitively obvious for me. heh

I've got one aqua-clear 70)(20 watts) and one generic 110 gph(unsure wattage) for circulation, and another 350 gph pump for a return (20 watt). replacing the aqua-clear 70 w/ a hydor koralia that's only 3.5 watts, won't help a ton, but every lil' bit helps, right? plus, the koralia are much less jet-stream. I think that adds up to about 20x turnover. okay for now, but maybe I'll like the hydor enough to add one at the other end.

tunze- HA! maybe when either me or my fiance graduates, MAYBE. for now I'm livin' on PC lights and free frags, the SW equivalent of ramen and mac & cheese. unless anyone wants to donate to the "wes is awesome at paying people with high-5s" fund.
