T5's will be great for Clams. T5 light penetrates water really well. I would say go with 4 bulbs on a 40 breeder and you can grow anything. You may be able to do 2 bulbs with careful placement. My clams seem to do best on the bottom right on the sand. I have placed them up higher and on the rock for more more light, but they never seem to plant themselves and take hold.

I have clams under my T5's. I have a six bulb fixture over a 90 gallon. They do really well.
Go for it!

Hypertech is getting growth and his SPS are happy under 2-bulbs. I'd say 2 bulbs is fine. I can't say for certain, but they may even be fine on the bottom with 2 bulbs.

Hypertech is thinking of adding 2 more bulbs when I was up at his place. But you are right, he is getting some good growth. Maybe I am just bias because I went with 4 on my 40 breeder frag tank. I think you would be fine with 2, don't get me wrong. However I don't think 4 is overkill by any means.

Yep, 2 is enough and I am getting growth. I think I would be getting better colors and more growth with 4 so I'm planning to add 2 more bulbs.
If its right smack under the center of the bulbs you could grow the clam with 2. 4 is much more flexible though.
