View Full Version : How much weight?

Let's say you have an old all-glass 125 (which I do...)
the 125 is, of course, resting on a layer of pink foam.
And let's say you want to put a RODI reservoir above one end of it (which I do...)
And further, let's say that the full reservoir might weigh as much as 250 - 300 lbs (which it probably does)
And let's say that building some type of "shelf" above the tank is... problematic...
So we consider, for a moment, just plonking a platform right on top of the end of the 125, right on the frame... and place the reservoir on that...
How much weight can be placed on the aquarium like that?

Ok, Ron, here is the solution:
Put your Mythbuster suit on, load that baby up until she goes. Report back to us at what point she gave in
There's plenty of 125's out there for replacement purposes
In any case...I have no idea and I won't even attempt to guess.

You could attempt to build a half shelf supporting it to help displace some of the weight between that and the tank.

I think that you would be riding the edge on that one, up to ~200lbs I have experience placing that much weight on in that type of scenario. But 250-300lbs is unknown to me.

If the tank if a front view only... What about cutting a piece of plywood the same width and Height on the end and the same width as you res. and height of the tank on the back. The plywood would only require 3/4" of space and would transfer the weight of the res. to the stand on two sides cutting down the overall weight on the tank.

storrisch, I wish every single one of your posts featured a rendering like that

Here's what I did....
I lag bolted 2x4s into the wall just above the tank in one corner, and placed my shelf on that. That supported it on two whole sides. Then, I placed notched out 2x4 post from the unsupported corner down to the frame of the tank.
At first, I thought that would place only half of the weight on the 125, but thinking of it more in terms of a table, that is, a square with four legs, the shelf is still supported on all four corners, and only one of the corners is transferring weight onto the 125, so I'm thinking it's only bearing perhaps 25% of the weight, or 75 pounds tops. I think It'll handle that without much problem.
