I'm thinking of setting up a lagoon/sea-grass biotope tank. Has anyone had any experience with growing seagrasses? Where can a guy get them from and what kind of requirments do the have?

I think ORA sells seagrass... check with fritz..... that's cool, good luck. Don't forget the mangroves!!!! Really cool concept!

I already have one mangrove. I hope to setup the tank with a very fine live sand about 4" deep. It will be a lower flow tank that will focus more on inverts and plants. I looked at ORA and they do carry a number of macro-agleas but I'm looking for the true saltwater plnts like turtle grass.

That's suck a great idea.... I think inland aquatics does a lot of that kind of stuff they are big into ATS and stuff. Not sure if they sell direct though.... I'm sure you can get Turtle grass from the LFS.
Sounds like a great idea though.....I always wanted to do an atoll aquarium. Somehow build an island in the middle with a reef around it.

If you want some more mangroves, let me know. I wanted to bet some more for my tank. Last time I got 24 for $22 shipped, we can split up an order or two of them. I still have all 24 and they are growing like mad.

I'd thought of that, and concluded it would be really hard...I think you'd need a deep tank to pull that off, close to 3-4 feet....to make it look sweet, at that point I couldnt reach anything..but if you do I suggest a wave box:)

I had a really good article on growing seagrasses but I am not sure what happened to it. I remember them saying to make sure you have the root system with sediment/sand around it. Otherwise they don't tend to make it.

you can also look at reefcleaners.org, they have manatee grass and oar grass.

I was thinking of doing something similiar with my 3X3X14" frag tank a while back. I still may do this as I want to keep some Cuttlefish and I think that would be a great natural habitat for them, plus it really reminds me of the inshore areas of Belize in which I am thinking of heading back to this winter or next ;)
