Do a search on reef central for them. Lots of good reviews there.

they are very good at moving alot of water with little power draw. Do it! I'm going to be putting 4 of them in my new tank.

They're great. I'm running two 1200s and would like to add two more if it weren't for all my darn sand. But a few things to keep in mind. First, they are a DIY project that you get what you put into it. Second is longevity, the way they're set up now after about three months the thrust washer wears through and needs to be replaced. If you don't the rubber stopper will wear through and you'll need to buy a new impeller to replace the stopper.

I never heard about this on the thrust washer. Sounds like something that could happen though.
They are great. I was very impressed at what they can do, but be carefull how close you put some corals to them. They are a DIY also so they will take some fine tuning to get right but seem to work great after you get them dialed in.

Hopefully Seamonkey will chime in but it sounded like he's getting a new molded impeller that will be simply plug and play. This would take the DIY factor out.

I love them, but the only thing I found with mine is that it doesnt like to stop if it goes backwards.. i probally just didnt have the acrylic rod in the right position, though.

My experience is largely the same. Loved them at first. After time, even ones that used to run the correct direction no longer do. I know the prop isn't hitting the stopper rod anymore. The funniest thing is, in my case, they NEVER want to run forwards. Maybe 1/10th of the time they'll start up forwards, but will always switch to running backwards. I'm hoping that moving the stopper rod will help. I'm also hoping that moving the stopper rod doesn't make it just sit and chatter as they always seem to want to reverse.

There are many types of "mods" available.
I have three of the mod kits(on 1200's) that Ryan sells at www.mjmods.com and they work great.
My experience is that 2 of the 3 worked perfectly right away and the third was a little noisy at for the first couple weeks, now it is quiet like the others.
I'm know Ryan has made a few revisions since I got mine about a year ago, and he is still working to make the mod as simple as possible.

it is a DIY project and some of them you do need to tinker with from time to time. After all, you are modding a 290 gph to do like 8 times that much flow. If you are looking for a 2,000 gph pump that works out of the box and you will never have to touch , get some tunzes. If ya like tinkering with things and supping up your gear then mod your MJ , its a fun project . I think the people who mod their MJ's to save money are sometimes disappointed , the people who do it because they like projects like this, like to show others the results and talk about how" I made that" get really excited about it.
I'm told what helpfully will be the final revision of the impeller will be done early next month and be in my hands by the middle of next month . Sadly this will take out all of the DIY in the project and I will prolly stop selling all the DIY parts for this because it wont make sense to stock them anymore. Turns a cool project into just another commercial item : (
I have sold 50+ units at a time to clubs in group buys where they all get together and build them, the feedback was always fantastic . They had a good time and left with a neat project, will be sad to see that go. I think the clubs in australia alone have bought like 400-500 of these things.
The thrust washer deal seems to vary from unit to unit . mine show no signs of ware but others only last a few months . luckily they are like $1 so if ya have to replace them a couple times a year that's no big deal . Id imagine this might very depending on how smooth the bottom of your impeller is.

I had trouble with mine at first, but it has been running for at least 6 months with no problems. I haven't checked the washer though...

If it wants to keep trying to spin in reverse shave alittle off the propeller and it will stop kicking in reverse since i"ve done this 5 mths ago not one problem since.

its a amazing to me how many people i have told this to and rather than sand a bit off the prop they would prefer to get frustrated and throw it in the trash . Like you would somehow be able to tell the different between 2200- and 2400 GPH.

Ryan do you offer and discounts to club members? :fish: I am interested in two high flow kits with two ball joint mounting plates. How wide of a stream do they put out?

Yeah, they definitely push a TON of water compared to stock. I have one 1200 that I put in my 75g tank, and for my tastes it was almost too much flow. I was getting rolling dune action with my sand. I want to see if putting it on the 900 body would reduce the flow, but don't think it will - someone chime in - I think the spin at same speeds, just have less power/torque?
Mine was a bit noisy so I had to fool with it, but you can't beat them for the value IMO. Like people said, if you want 100% then shell out and get a tunze but if you are looking for the DIY, they are a good alternative if you know what to expect.

well i got the new molded impeller today , i could not be happier . it starts with one click every time , runs silent and the prop is removable and cheap to replace if you ever need to . I would even consider using these on a waver maker now . I might have to try out the wave function on the RK 2 : )
I think it will take about 2 months for them to manufacture them and get them here.

So Ryan, will it only be on size or will you have both the medium and highflow in the molded impellers available ?
sea monkey
06-06-2007, 09:45 PM
to start with it will be the one size but i will certainly have two sizes on the next order , hell maybe three
a lower flow mod perhaps?

One size meaning the high flow ?

This sounds very interesting... I'm going to have to get some of the new ones. I've been thinking about it for almost a year.

I can't wait to play with a new modded prop. :greenguy:
Does this mean the med-low flow ones will be ready in around 2 mnths too?

any chance we can replace the old prop with the new prop? i have a maximod that i havent used for months, because it would never start in the right direction

I took these with my phone but this is kinda what it looks like .
basically the prop comes off but has some slits built into it so there is no need to glue it on . This makes it possible to put a variety of sized props on and replace them if they break or ware out

One size meaning the high flow ?
yes , the one I have now is the high flow one but it has 1.25 mm of the prop removed off both sides so it will work with old or weak MJ's .
i was unable to tell the difference in flow between this and the old one by hand

both of the ones i just tested start every time on the very first click and makes very little noise . you can't replace the prop itself but the impeller will work inside the shroud you already have : )
