So i've heard people talk about hooking their skimmers up directly to their overflow for better skimming, is this possible with a in sump style skimmer? Anyone have any experience with this (David?)? I have a octopus nw-150( which i'm sure you'll say is too small for my 120, but it skims well, so I havent upgraded yet), it's pretty much exactly like a Euroreef.

If you skimmer is a recirculating design or you plan to do the recirc mod with a seperate feed pump/connection then yes you can.

nope, no recirc. dont these extruded acrylic skimmers crack when you try and do a recirc mod?

get something like a uniseal and run your overflow feed directly into it. Only comment I would have is that I wouldn't want to run too much flow directly through the skimmer. As David noted, if you aren't doing a recirc, it probably doesnt' make much sense.

wouldnt it screw the pump up forcing water through it?

YOu aren't forcing it through the pump. It drops in at the top of the skimmer.

yeah I knew that, but I thought you were talking about doing w/ a non recirc model, gotcha. thanx for the link though.

The good news NW150 isn't extruded. It cuts like butter with a regular wood hole saw if you wanted to mod it....... There are a number of mods for the octopus skimmers to make rock. The is too much friction/head loss at the volute so you want to widen and mesh wheel mod will more than double the air intake.
