I've read they need at least 3" but preferably 4"-6"+.
You'll also want to cover the tank at least initially.
They'll defend their territory against smaller gobies.

you can actually get away with 2-3inches no problem. You just need to setup a rockwork under the sand so the jawfish can construct a burrow under the rock work. it will be happy like this as well.
also there might be a confrontation with the diamond goby as that also burrows..... if the two decided they like each other's home, they'll fight....

That's a GREAT price! I just purchased a couple a few weeks back, and with shipping I paid a very similar price!
