View Full Version : new dwarf lion
well, I picked one up (dendrochirus zebra), but of course, he's only eating live stuff right now. Are there any LFS in the near area that have grass or ghost shrimp for cheap? I'd rather not feed him goldfish, and mollies aren't gonna breed fast enough. I guess I'd take anyone's damsels they hate, too... I'll start wiggling a shrimp on a stick tonight or tomorrow... :-) wish me luck!
good luck and get a pic of your wee lil' one.
hard to get a pic, as he's tending to hide out till duskish lighting. Then he's all over the place. I took a short vid of him a little bit after I put him in the tank, maybe I'll get that uploaded sometime. He's maybe 4" or so.

I got one, but its not Fuzzzy and its not a Dwarf:tongue:
I've had my eyes out for quite a while, so it was probably me... hard to find for under $50 that look happy. We'll see how this guy turns out, but I know he's eating and he's pretty active around dusk and at night.

I love my Zebra Lion!! I've had it for about 2 years and he's now to the point where he will actually eat flakes (i don't really feed him that though)
Congrats on the new super cool fish! (try to resist petting him though)
I'll try to attach a pic
I will call SF tomorrow and get prices. I've been wondering if mine was miss ID'd, I thought it looked more like a fuzzy. I'll post pics soon. Either way, I'll probably be pickin' up a snack for him soon.
well, 100% positive it's a fuzzy dwarf, dendrochirus brachypteris. I think I may go off to SF for some ghost shrimp. Here's a crappy pic, I'll try for a better one soon.

nevermind the big ugly white rock, came from where my family lives in CA and all the coralline died off. Oh and for the record, the cinder blocks have been fine. You can see the tunicates and snail eggs and such that've colonized it, corraline is taking a while because I had almost no seed rock, but it's coming finally.
I said it had nice color before these pics are much better... I'm guessing you chose the cinder blocks to go for a "modern city" look... or cost effective look...
:fistcash:
a little bit of the look, but mostly for the $. I didn't want another tank that looked like a different version of my reef tank without corals. So this is a bad boys tank. It's too bad I think it's just a little too small for a snowflake morray, otherwise I thought that'd be perfect.
oh, and when he's just sitting there without his fins out, he looks really boring and drab. hopefully soon he'll figure out that day=food. He ate a grass shrimp today, so as soon as I feel like he's settling in, I'll be on to prepared food.

The D. Zebra is different than D. Brachypterus (Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish). I was asking because I remembered someone was looking for one, it may have been Wes. There is a small store in Buffalo, MN that usually carries them for $34. They are are a cool little fish, their body is very fuzzy looking. They had one Thursday when I was there picking up some softies and a Truncate Anthias that I had ordered. The store doesn't stock much saltwater and the tanks don't look that great but the owner will special order fish and inverts from a wholesaler at very fair prices (no freight) if the order can be picked up the evening of delivery. The price from Petsolutions for the Anthias is $50 plus freight, my cost was $17. So far the livestock I have received has been excellent, if not the owner will return it.
yeah, I know, I was only confused because he was sold as d. zebra, but he is certainly a dendrochirus brachypterus. I regularly look at something fishy, WoF, HarMar and (gasp!) roseville's petco. This guy came from the petco for under $20. It was too hard to resist at the price, size and coloration. He wasn't taking frozen but was interested in it, and quite active. I know positively he eats--he just ate a couple grass shrimp I picked up from TC reptile(on university), and the VERY first thing he did in my tank was rid me of a peppermint shrimp that had taken to picking at LPS. Here's hopin' he gets to frozen soon. I'm willing to put in the time, so I know he'll go for it eventually. I used to be one hell of a tenacious(sp?) fisherman, so I should be able to get him sooner or later.
