What are the best snails for multiplying so I don't have to worry about buying more?

narissus , cerith, and astrea do well. not sure what triggers it but in tree's 55 I gave her one of each and now there are about 50 younge ones gliding around.

tiger turbos can multiply in the tank without any intervention but of course nothing is a guarantee and may not survive the larvae stage. Usually they run about $3 each retail and most often will have to mail order has they aren't really common in the LFS. The other reason I really like the tiger turbos they stay smaller like astreas and look very similiar but they have a way to right themselves up that astreas don't so hermits can't get them as easy.

When Ron Shimek was in town years ago he said, it you have a spawning event of astrea. If you capture some sperm and some egg and put it in a dish on top of your tank so no predators with some algae and just let it sit you will get some babies and will get past the larvae stage so you can put in a refugium or something to grow out. If I remember though it takes about a year before they are of any size that's why you don't find captive in the hobby it's too much effort for too little money to go commercial. But apparently it's not hard.

I'm waiting to hear back from a buddy on RC but we both use to have... and I'm hoping he still does... these little snails (round shell not cone) that were about the size of a pea and did an amazing job and multiplied w/out problem so I never had to buy snails. Which is probably why they don't sell them. They didn't clean the glass only the rock so I did have a few turbos.

maybe nerite snails? I have a ton of them and they seemed to jump in population out of nowhere. I can't tell how much they're helping the algae, though.

I just looked up some pics of them and that's not them... and I never had algae with these guys either... at least not on the rock

lol... I'll let you know when I figure it out. My buddy lives in Sioux Falls and I might be able to have him mail me a bunch if he still has them. I know he's switched systems a few times.

I got it they are stometella's (sp) I'm trying to get him to mail me a bunch to start off... won't be of course till I get mine going which will be about a month. Also if you have power heads in your tank you'll need to have the guard on them for sure since they are so small.

If you can find a few stomella snails, they reproduce like crazy.

Stombus Snails are good multipliers. I believe Peggy at All-Reef carries them.
