hanging a luminarc?

I was won dering if it is possible to hang a luminarc withouth the mounting plate. By that I mean the flat piece of metal the scrwes to the top of the reflector and tat the eyelets are screwed into

I think it is required for strength. heat can warp the aluminum easily without a backbone. if you make one with wood put a chunk of roofing shingle or somthing to stop the heat between the wood and metal.
