View Full Version : Where to buy aptasia killing supplies?

So I redid a little of my rock work and I'm pretty sure I found an aptasia anemone. Its going to be a pain to get to, but I want to kill it before I have a problem.
Where do you go to buy a syringe to use to inject it?
What should I inject it with? I've read: kalk paste, lemon juice, distilled vinegar, boiling water.

Joe's Juice :D it comes with syringe, most lFS should stock it.

kalk paste has worked for me. I used a syringe from a old test kit.

If you already use/own Kalk, try that first. Heat it in microwave to a paste, I like to take the rock out if possible and just paste on the area and let dry. If not, using the old syringe from Salifert test kits usually does the trick.
You forgot to add fire to the list. Jerry likes to burn'em.

Also, turn off all your pumps before treating the aptasia.
kalk slurry is a piece of cake, may take 2 or 3 shots, but you don't have to do hardly ANYTHING. turn off the pumps and make a lil' slurry, get your syringe (I have about a dozen lying around--fiance is a nursing student), shoot it out at their mouth, as close as you can without touching them, and that's it. takes less time than reading the new posts on tcmas. :-)

Looking closer there is one big one and at lest 2 more little ones. They are, of course, on the big rock at the bottom. The fire solution sure sounds the most entertaining, but I'd have to dismantle the rock assembly to get it out.
So, if one doesn't want to buy Joe's Juice, and doesn't have a Salifert kit leftover or a fiance in nursing, where do you go to buy a syringe? Does Target sell them?

I'm sure any pharmacy would.
If you don't have a salifert test kit, then what do you use and what do you test for ? out of curiosity....

I have a Seachem test kit with pH, Alk, Nitrite, Nitrate, Ammonia (just been using the total).
I've just been running those basic tests while I establish my tank and will begin starting more tests very soon.
I'm thinking about starting to test for Ca so that I can use Kalkwasser. I'd like my pH to be a little higher but I don't want any of my other parameters to go out of whack with out a way to monitor what the kalkwasser is doing to them.
I've read that Salifert is/was very good. I'm wondering about them at the present time because their forum was closed on RC due to lack of response and the number of threads I've seen questioning the accuracy of the kits. There also seems to be a supply problem. Perhaps they are a young company that can't keep up with demand? Sometimes when that happens QC starts to fail and they just need some time to catch up with their growth. I'm not yet sure what brand kits I'll buy next.

Yep they should be by the pharmacy. Probably near the pill container/reminders.

I have had good luck with making a very dry paste of Kalk. Then I role it into a small balls. Then its very easy to take one of the balls on your finger tip (or a tool of some kind) and push it on to the aptasia. This works especially well when the anemone's base is in a small hole. I have not had much luck with injecting them but if you need a hypo you probably can get one at Fleet Farm in the farm medication area.

hypertech, if you have just a few aptasia best to erradicate manually and keep in check. Particularly with such a small tank where taking things in/out shouldn't be a problem, there shouldn't be any real areas that you can't reach pretty easily and if you did have to tear a little rockwork down to get to it, doesn't take much time to put it back ( at least in my son's 29g ).
Peppermint will co-exist and will live long term with or without the presense of aptasia. They scavenge. Usually only go after the small aptasia.
The main problem I have with shrimp in general is that if you do target feed any corals they will steal it unless you cover the coral during feeding. They also pick and crawl around things alot and can irritate and make things that are on the ground like zoanthids close up alot from being tramped on during while scavenging.
I have a mated pair of cleaner shrimp in my show tank but only reason why I put up with them is because I have tangs and help to keep ich and other things off the fish. Otherwise, I would not have any shrimp.

Unless I missed it, nobody said Mrs Wages Pickling Lime (aka, cheap kalk). Wal-Mart has em for $2 for a huge container. I do the kalk paste and hit em with a syringe. I keep an extra jug of it on hand at all times.
