Skimmer pump?

It seems something in my display tank has been messing with my small frags and they keep disappearing. I think they just become detached and are lost in the rock. Anyway, I am going to set up a small designated frag tank. I have a older protein skimmer (4.5" X 24") that uses a Rio 2100 pump and venturi. As I am still using "old" new tech, can anyone recommend a better pump? Would it work better with a needle wheel pump? Thanks.
