View Full Version : coral fragging
anyway i've been reading on this an dwould like to spread some around my tank. if i were to cut a mushroom in half and set the halves on some loose rock rubble it will reattach itself to the rock and grow right?

Should do so, yes.

Be careful, mushrooms can completely take over a tank. I currently have a 20 gal. covered in bluespot mushrooms. My next tank might have some shrooms but they will be in small groups completely seperate from the main reef structure, and as soon as one of them strays from his home he's gonna get a small but lethal dose of calcium:agree:
if i don't cut them will they still spread? i have a rock that i just bought, has zooanthids on it with 3 mushrooms. one mushroom just kind of took off, like the string that attaches it to the rock snapped or something, i was thinking about cutting this one in half because it's just floating around in the tank.

I started with one blue dot shroom and now have over an estimated 150 without ever cutting or fragging. they even multiply in my 10 gal. with just a 15 watt 50/50 bulb and a small power filter. :fish:

There is no wrong way to frag a mushroom. The only trick is getting them to attach. I personally have pretty good luck with needle and thread method. Setting them in loose rubble works fine as long as you have low flow area.

I cut mine into fourths and put them in a TALL Tupperware with some sand and small rubble, then covered it with thule. They attached in about three weeks.

i once heard that you can put a mushroom into a blender and chop it up course. rinse the remains in a screen and dump into the tank. the peices will fall into holes and cracks then regrow. the peices that come from the disk may not always grow, but the peices of the foot will usually heal and grow.

I'm going to try this in the not so distant future.

Ive also heard this, I would make sure the blade is not on for too long, and I would sacrific a inexpensive and common type if your going to try it. If it works let me know man!
That's what I call a protein shake!

For fragging purposes, I put together my own system. I do not have a frag tank right now so I got a large "speciman container" (the hang-on thing that your LFS uses to catch and bag fish), drilled three roles of holes on every side and filled up the bottom with about two inches of LS. I can set my frag plugs in the sand and provide a very low-flow area for the frags to attach. Once firmly attached you can move them to higher-flow areas of the main.

other than the 'bumps' - how are rics and mushrooms different? do you frag rics the same way as mushrooms?
thanks!

rics are a bit different...u want to make sure u have a mouth for each frag, not just the meat part. u could even cut inbetween the mouths as long as u have a piece of it

Most wait till a polyp has two mouths and then cut them. You can bisect the mouth if you are bold. I personally wouldn't chance it with some of the hard to find colors.
