I would like to get feedback on what some other members are doing in regards to feeding there corals. I know there are products out on the market such as zeovit that suggest that by using there product it will increase color and growth in my SPS and LPS corals. So my first question is how many people use supplements like this? Second question is if you do use a supplement what kind of results have you had? Third question is what products would you recommend using and what ones would you recommend not using? Any advise on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

i feed reef chili, and H2O life coral food mix. i shoot kent marine zoomax once a week, and i feed my frog spawns and bubble coral krill a couple times a week (bubble could do more feedings its a pig). My corals seem to like my schedule on feeding, i dont mix the chili and coral food mix i'll do each once a week few days apart. I think those who have seen my tank can attest that the corals have pretty good color.

For dosing i actually (reccomended by Becky) just started using the aqua vitro product line and i have to say i like it so far, i use fuel, ions and calcification, all go twice a week. The aqua vitro product line is very well priced too i will add. I also dose iodine, once a week Lugol's Solution is my preference.

I feed my corals (mostly LPS, some SPS) reef chili 3 times per week and mysis for the LPS a few times per week.

From what I see so far, people like the reef chile. Is this product target fed to the corals?

I'm mainly LPS dominant and just target feed Mysis with a forceps, usually about once a week. I have noticed significant growth out of my Acans by feeding. I went a while without feeding to test and they simply were not as happy and growth slowed.

I do not use any supplements however. Just good ol' top off and water changes...

no, its fed to the tank at once

http://www.reefchili.com/

its a good product, corals love it, youll see alot of growth using it. im a variety is the spice of life kind of guy tho, the H2O food is a frozen reef food fed the same as reef chili but has more protein in it and i see more color responce from the H2O, i think becouse of the protein.
Joe has a good line on this product i havent seen it anywhere else but his store yet.

You really dont have to feed anything...they will feed off of what you feed the fish.

Do you have any experience with this (Amino Acid High Concentrate by ZEOvit)?
They say the product will produce the below results.

Up to 100% increased growth of many SPS, even sensitive types such as Fiji and Tonga corals. – Large polyp corals will grow as well. – Injured corals recover faster. – Tridacnas show more defined colors clearly. – Gonipora and Alveopora can be kept easy. – Improved coloration of all corals. – Fiji and Tonga Montiporen grow faster and maintain their different colors. – SPS corals produce more slime and therefore have improved protection from predators. – No darkening of coral tissue while dosing. – Extreme polyp expansion in all types of corals.

i wont say increased growth 100%, but you will see much better PE and deeper color for sure.

I liked regular mysis for my LPS. For SPS I would use DTs oyster eggs from time to time.

I dose a variety of things. Coral Frenzy, Phytoplan, Phyco pure(live green water), Decaped Brine, & rotifers. I feed my lps and zoanthids mysids and gutloaded frozen brine. Soaked in kent garlic and zoe. I saw major sps growth when i started dosing the pycopure and rotifers.

I do not feed my corals, per say, but feed the tank a mixture of Rod's food (www.rodsfood.com), DT's phyto, Selcon and garlic two to three times per week. I have a combo of clams, anemones, sps, lps, and softies. Seems to meet everyone's needs.

Let's not confuse Polyp extension with actually feeding activity. They can be mutually exclusive.

Aminos are a perfect example, they do cause polyp extension, but aminos are not consumed like food. They should only be dosed with the onset of N limitation with SPS.

I do like Rod's Food, my only complaint is that the food is cooked and not raw, so a significant amount of nutrition is lost in the process. Homemade food with oysters, mussels, shrimp, etc is simple and more cost effective, but takes some time (and a patient spouse) to make.

I have never used reef chili and likely never will, there's better choices like oyster eggs, mysis (lps only). The only 'concoction' I've seen that was really effective is KZ Sponge Power and CoralVit, especially the former (note these are best for SPS).

SPS are also fed when you feed your fish....

The key is understanding how much nutrients your system can process so you don't end up polluting your system via feeding.

I use reef chili, had amazing results, give it 5/5 stars! and I do target feed with BRS' target feeding bottle I usually spray all my acans, zoas, and sps, let it chill for like 5-10 mins then turn on the power heads and it usually stays suspended for a good 20-30 mins after that before it starts to totally disappear usually 2-3 times a week, I had a question also sortof on topic, will feeding a food like reef chilli be enough to sustain a sun coral, reef chilli contains: Bio-engineered Zooplankton, Spray Sried Phytoplanton, Freeze Dried Rotifers, Freeze Dried Copepods, Dried Daphnia, Spirulina Powder and an Artemia Nauplii replacement diet.

Its a waste for SPS, Rotifers would be the only thing they would eat from your list of ingredients.... You'd need to feed Tubastrea sp. very frequently, at least daily...

Are you saying that using Reef chili to feed SPS is a waste?

I think soaked (selco) mysis is your best bet.. I would worry a bit that the blended up silversides would do more polluting than feeding you corals... You could also buy some raw shrimp, blend that up so its chunky (freeze the rest), and that will be a good source to. But Mysis is a very good food source.

So long story short, you recommend Rod's food or KZ Sponge Power and CoralVit for PSP.

Or even make your own food.... blender mush will be much more nutritious than anything you can buy from an LFS. The big reason against Rod's Food is that the food is cooked, but relative to a lot of other food you can buy its good. Oyster eggs are very good. The key with feeding SPS is that the food needs to be VERY SMALL. It's not that reef chili isn't good, its just that for SPS, most of the food is too big. Brine shrimp is too big, as is mysis. Rotifers are good (which reef chili contains), and they DO NOT eat veggies.....

Remember, that SPS will absorb N from the water column (why dosing aminos work). I'd go slow with any increase in feeding as you want to make certain that your filtration system (live rock, skimmer, wc, etc) can process the additional waste without polluting the system (very counterproductive).
