Can a closed loop be done without drilling for an intake?

maybe only some pumps can pull a suciton?

Yes, You can place a suction line over the top. You will need to place a T with a pipe plug in the top side so you can prime the system before starting the pump. I will try and find a pic of my old one. Good luck

The long end is the suction inside the tank.http://www.tcmas.org/forums/imagehosting/thum_6045eae6900d0b8.jpg (http://www.tcmas.org/forums/vbimghost.php?do=displayimg&imgid=34)

better to drill the tank IMO

but why not just use some power heads if you are worried about drilling.

what if the power goes out?

I'm with Jerry. If you going to plan a closed loop, I wouldn't skimp.

Many have used siphon closed loops but the added PVC in your tank doesn't make sense as that is what most people are trying to avoid.

If the power goes out the suction will not be lost as long as the h2o level does not get lower than the suction and return holes.
