OK, I have researched and researched for GOOD plans for my 75 gallon stand. This will be in my basement and doesn't need to look good, jsut be strong enough and sturdy enough to hold my tank. If i can fit my 20H sump under it that is fine, if not that is fine to.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have started a stand, that I just don't feel too confident about.

UGH!!!

Are you just looking for guidance or someone to come do it?

Just guidance, this is not going to be a permanent stand. My permanent stand was wrecked by water when I moved to Winona.

I've been following this thread and plan on building my stand for my 110 XH using this concept:

Thanks, this is exactly what I am looking for.

Do you think I can substitite 4 X 4 's for the legs instead of two 2 X 4's? I already have the 4 X 4's.

I am going to start on this tonight.

if you notice the corners on the stand they are what is called an L corner they aren't actually square, i would just take the 4x4s back and save the money on them(unless you cant return them) the idea is to have the vertical 2x4 between the upper and lower frames to transfer the wait of the aquarium through the wood and not rely on the fasteners.

I was planning on using 4X4's also. You would need to notch the top and bottom for the 2X lumber running around the top and bottom. It is important that the load of the tank be on the vertical lumber. The compression strength of wood it extremely high as discussed in the post. That is where you want your weight to be. I am also planning on taking off about 1/2" of unnotched part on both ends so the horizontal spans touch the ground and tank and not the 4X4s.

Good Luck!

This way would work, but you are still only getting that 1 1/2"x 3 1/2" of bearing and then the 4x4 is taking up space under your tank. I was planning on using 4X4's also. I already cut them, so I can't take them back. I will stick with the 2 X 4 and use the 4 X 4's for something else.

Good point, I need to keep as much space under the tank as possible, so I will go with 2 X 4's.

Thanks

True but if you look at the plans there is a 2X4 screw strip in the interior of the cabinet. This is important as it is where you tie the vertical 2X4s to the framing around the top and bottom. That 2X4 screw strip would take up as much room as the unnotched portion of a 4X4 inside the stand. More actually. By my design I will have a 2X2 section of the 4X4 inside the stand at each corner. The remaining portion of the 4X4 would be under the top and resting on the bottom supporting boxes. This would replace the 2X4 screw strip (1 1/2" X 3 1/2" nominal) inside the stand (See attached for a bad MS paint pic).

I still need to figure out how to make this stand look like furniture and not a stand though!

Thanks!!
Chris

I will take a picture of the one i just made later today to show you how i did the vertical support framing. it uses the L corner and doesnt need the nailing strip. and it is still all tied together.

Excellent. I'd really like to see it. I could use that extra room in the stand!

Thanks!

Here are the pictures of the stand i just built. now keep in mind that this stand is made to hold a 75 gallon on the bottom and a 55 gallon on the top. the tanks are for holding r/o and pre mixed water change water. if this were for just 1 tank on top i would have L corners at all 4 cornersand the bottom frame would be raised off the floor about an inch to make it easier level the stand. any more questions feel free to ask.
