The mature corallites on this chalice appear to form little raised mounds like that; it's not on a "rock" so to speak. That's all skeleton below.

I actually posted a couple fts in my zoa eye candy thread. Can't remember what page. It's a little old now, couple months, but gives some idea I guess. Right now it's just a jumbled mess of cramped coral. It's not ideal and not my final arrangement, but for now it's workin'. I just can't stop grabbing up new eye candy.

Tryin' ta slip that Tangerine Dreams in, eh? Well, the growout pics are just for us. Those will be coming by email. I didn't really bother posting pics of those as they are still small and unimpressive looking without a macro shot. They're doing great though. I was going to send out an email last night, but it got late, and my fingers got tired.

Nope. I did frag some of the Funky Watermelon Acan rotundaflora though, and that is likely what you got. Also a very nice piece.

But, yeah, I'd like to get in line for the TD, PB and both Mia's favias as well.
Well, if you're referring to the mammary coral by PB, then you're in line for that with the growout already I think, and it looks like it's working on a fourth small eye as well; really starting to see some growth now. The Mia's are both pretty much fraggable, and the TD will be a while, but you know you'll get your shot.

Hey Brett, I couldn't pass this one up. I actually got it for a steal of a deal, so to speak; guy owed me so he made me a great price. Such a nice animal, and a hungry little beast too. He had his feeders out on Friday night after I put him in the tank just hours before. Those pics are from today when I got home from work. Gonna give him some krill here now.
And that saw is staying far, far away from him.

Thanks Brett. It has been doing really well lately. The colors have just gotten insane! Probably even better since that pic. Just waiting for some more eyes to pop. The eyes are all so scrunched together that it's not much good for fragging. Lots of room for new eyes though!

Sounds good Zack. The eyes do look pretty close together. The eyes on my blue magic are close together too. Makes it difficult to frag.

That's because it's very, very secret; it's a new business model I'm working on. :gay1:
Sorry, I'm really mainly a hobbyist, mostly. I mean, these days everyone with a reef tank is an aquaculturist, so the line gets blurred. I sell some corals to pay for my hobby and buy myself more nice corals like the ones I post pictures of. I don't depend on selling any corals for a living or anything. If you want to see what I have in my collection, and availability, you just have to click the link in my sig.:beerchug:

Right now my acan collection is in growout mode. I lost my entire acan collection to that tank crash in November '10 and I've been rebuilding slowly since, picking up frags here and there. So far it's coming along nicely, but it'll probably be till next year before I'm comfortable with doing any fragging.

No...those guys were just placed there for the photos. It was a good spot as far as distance from camera to objective, lighting, etc. After the pictures they were placed back on the sandbed where I normally keep them.

Your corals seem to be just a tad bit uglier than Rays:)
Koletang
02-22-2012, 03:00 PM
What lighting are you running over your tank? I have 3 T5s and 2 Stunners over my 29 gallon. My orange montis do great even on the bottom near the sand bed, but for some reason my ORA pink polyp cap is doing terrible mid-tank
How hardy are the encrusting montis (Rainbow, tropicana, sunset, etc.) compared to the orange cap?
Nanofins
02-22-2012, 03:19 PM
Compared to an orange cap, I'd put the ones you listed on par.
What issues are you having with the pink polyp cap? I've found that one to be a tiny bit more sensitive, sometimes preferring less light. Is it browning out or bleaching? I've kept the pink polyp even in semi-shaded areas and the green just gets richer/darker. Too much light and it tends to get really pale, sometimes looking light blue, but being close to bleaching. The base should be a nice green color, so unless it's browning out, which would require some really low, crappy lighting, I would say it's probably getting too much light.
What 3 bulbs are you running, for how long, and what stunner strips are you using?
Lurch

Pink polyp (two separate frags) was mid tank and got very pale so I moved them to the top next to the green slimer and on one frag it is bleaching and on the other frag it is getting a bit brown (weird since they are right next to each other). Green slimer, idaho grape, orange cap, cyphastrea, and birds of paradise have enough light so I don't think the brown is from lack of light. I'll try moving 'em down, but the future seems grim for the pink polyp cap.
What 3 bulbs are you running, for how long, and what stunner strips are you using?
x3 454's and x2 12.5" 6 watt Stunner LED 18-8000K White 6-453nm Blue stunners. I am stuck with the 18" bulbs so there is no blue+ and what not. When I change any one of the three 454's with a actinic white the Front half of the tank is blue and back half is stark white. There is literally a line in the sand. So I got the stunners since the 454's were just too blue for my taste. Bulbs are about 6-7 months old.
Nanofins
02-22-2012, 04:01 PM
Well, I've had issues with the 454's, so I'm prone to partially blame them and even more so if all 3 are 454's, but I would also say moving them up was probably not a good move for them either. I'm not sure what your options are for an 18" bulb, but I have to say I'd recommend switching them out for something else, as I've had a lot of bleaching issues with the 454 bulbs when I tried them.
The one that's turning brown could be getting diatom growth on it if it's receding. Move them to the shade and hope for the best.
Also, have you tried raising the fixture up off the tank a bit more to diffuse the bulbs and lessen the color segregation?

Time for a 24" or 30" fixture. Heck, I think you'd be better off getting one of those cheap Nova Extreme fixtures with 2 x 24w bulbs just to increase your choice of bulbs. You can pick up one of those off Drs. Foster & Smith for like $75.
Koletang
02-22-2012, 04:22 PM
This is retrofitted into a biocube. A fixture is a no-can-do everything else is healthy and growing, its just these pink polyps. Thanks for the help though. :) If I remember correctly Ray used all 454's over his tanks for quite some time. And his uglies did pretty well although I don't believe he was exactly overjoyed with the performance of the bulbs.
Nanofins
02-22-2012, 04:40 PM
You can ask Ray, but in my recent conversations with him it sounded like he may have started to see some issues over the long term. I think he was happy initially but the results of long term use were less stellar. Still, as a retrofit, that does leave you in a tight spot. You may be unable to keep the pink polyp happy, but first try moving them down and into the shade and see if that helps.

02-22-2012, 04:45 PM
Majority of the bulbs were 454s on my original frag tanks, but it didn't do much other than astetics. It was also time to replace the bulbs and decided to go to ATi bulbs atinics/blue plus/purple plus instead of continuing with 454s. As Zack said in time it made my corals a little translucent/bleach look, but again I don't know if I can blame them directly as their were other parameters involved.
Would I still use 454s, maybe 1 at most 2 bulb in a 6+ bulb fixture but not as my main light source.

I would say it would be harder to pin the blame on these bulbs if there weren't other testimonies, mine included, that they have had the same effect in other tanks, and after switching back to blue+ the problems have corrected themselves for me. Not that there couldn't be other contributing factors, but it does seem to be a common element.

It's just like all the Latin names of the fish; you get used to remembering that kind of stuff. We were at the MN zoo the other day and my wife was asking what kinds of fish there were, so I started giving her the Latin names and she was like "whahuh?" It surprised me how many I could actually remember.

Thanks, yeah, it went over pretty well over there. It's hard to be 100% certain because they share so many morphological similarities, but I believe it to be an Acanthastrea rotundaflora color form that has not been distributed in the hobby before. Rotundos look so chalice-like that it can be hard to tell, but there are some differences that pop out to me after staring at it for excessive amounts of time. Regardless of what it's taxonomical name is, it's a gorgeous coral.
