View Full Version : New addition to the 10 gallon

Hi everybody!

So, I've had my little 10 gallon aquarium set up now (Ever since I got it) I placed the rocks in it and made a little cave (cause I knew that the fish would like it), The Salinity is good, I'm running carbon through the filter. Some algae will be coming in on monday, That'l lower some of the nitrates (which arent deadly high, pretty low) plus add some color to the plain white aquarium. I had heated up the aquarium, and have a back up heater for it, the temp is at about 71 right now, I'm trying to get it to 74-79.

So to say the actual fish I got, it is an Anglerfish. About 1 inch big. I'll get some shrimp today/tomorrow to feed him, the Brine and mysis dont stay in the same spot for very long so I'll have to get some coctail shrimp (I don't know what its called), but its the kind that people eat, and feed him with tongs/chopsticks. I do realize I will need as grow out tank in the future though.

I drop acclimated him/her, at first he (just gonna say that instead of him/her, or he/she) was Yellow, but since they can change color he turned whiteish gray, the color of the sand. I intended him to go to the cave to hide at first, but he went in between the rockwork I was ok with that though. Today he went in his cave though.

I've named him, Edgar. If its a girl than I don't know what it should be called.

At the pet store, you can buy krill. Krill are small shrimp like salad shrimp but they still have their shells and are probably less expensive. You could also look at PE mysis. They tend to be larger. It may help if you turn off the pump so it doesn't blow around.

It shouldn't be hard to get the temp where it belongs. If it isn't warming up (and you're pretty sure it isn't your thermometer that's broke), turn the dial on the heater way up, grab it with your hand and lift it out of the water only briefly. You should it feel it starting to get warm. If it doesn't, then the heater is broken and not working. If it does start to get warm, put it right back in the water so it doesn't get too hot to touch while you are holding it.

Ok, I have some krill, I just wasn't sure If that was the thing to feed.

And I don't know about the anglers that walk on the bottom, but the free swimming ones are always female. The males are tiny, and mate with the female by biting on to them. Then the bodies of the two fuse together and then the female can use her "tumor" to fertilize her whenever she wants.
Gross, I know :gay1:

Edit: Okay that info is just for deepwater anglers, the ones with the bioluminescent lures. The reef dwelling anglers and frogfish can have male/females, but I don't think there's a way to sex them

For that small of a tank, I would rely on water changes for nitrate control, more than algae. Those fish are messy too, so keep diligent on them. If this were my fish, I would start by feeding it live food and try to ween it to frozen. Feeder shrimp and guppies is where I would start.

He does eat a little of the food, it just goes past him to fast.

I guess I should try smaller Ghost shrimp.
To try to feed him I used my fingures, a tweezers,
chopsticks, and putting it in the from of his face with
the net. He tried to get it when I used the net, he missed
though. Now he's up by the filter, starting to come back.

Well....

So, the Angler (Edgar) got "Power headed" I had a foam sort of thing over it,
no nothing was able to get sucked in, I didn't see it happen. But when I
woke up and when to go see him, he was on the foam, I don't get how it
could have even hurt him. he was just on the outside of it, none of him even
touched the power head, only the foam. So I pulled him off as quickly as I
could. And now he's turned black, I suppose that's because he has no senes
anymore. I really don't get how it could have done anything to him.
I don't want to give up on Anglers though, A lot of people have told me that
It's going to happen, but I'm not going to take advantage of that and say it
was nothing. I'm still going to have the tank set up for another angler
sometime. I am going to frame the picture on the first page because it is the
best picture I have ever got. I also made a song about Anglerfish, called
"The Anglers dance". Hopefully I'll be able to show everybody that....

Maybe if you put a divider up on one end so that the power head would be behind that. Ala biocube.

ya, it would be sort of hard though. The tank is a half moon, so a divider would'nt work so well.

I'm going to wait a little until the next one, than the tank will be even more ready. With the algae in it also.

I bet you could have something made at SF rather inexpensively. It would just need to be cut to size and have some teeth for an over flow, and maybe a hole to mount the return.

I think this would be better than the foam over the pump intake, if that is what killed him. He may not have been very healthy to begin with. These guys seem to be a little ify. I know that SF has lost more than one for no apparant reason. With a divider in there, the worst you would have to worry about is the food getting behind it and dieing. You could then use some enkmat as a filter to keep stuff out of the back. I did not understand that this was a half moon aquarium, maybe you would not have the room.

I was originaly thinking it was a standard 10, and to put the divider off to the left or right side. Maybe transfer it over to buckets and bring the tank into SF to see what they think.

I know, I'm just picking on you.

Also, what kind of water changes have you been doing in that time.

Ammonia is a huge NO-NO. Anything registering on a test kit is generally considered lethal to inhabitants.

I don't think that you should give up, I believe that you should be able to keep one very successfully in a nano, it just takes a lot more to do it. If you haven't already, start doing some heavy searches on other sites. Don't listen to what anyone has to say, except people that have actually kept them alive, NO ONE.
