I have 5 gal that's running and I want to breed clowns. It's completely bare and just has a heater. I have a couple questions.
1. What kind of filter do u use so the babies don't get sucked up and die?
2. When do u start feeding the babies?
3. What do u feed the babies?
4. Do I need to separate the adults and babies ever?
5. Will I need to separate the parents?
6. How long does the entire process take?

i dont think you would have a very easy time getting clowns to breed in something that small... but if you did..
you would want to use a bubbling air filter with frequent water changes, feed rotifers and small babies moving up to BBS and eventually BS and then PE.
you would want to separate the parents from babies as soon as the babies are near hatching. if you have a cycled tank ready just move the parents in there.
timeline is the only thing i have no clue about.

i have my false perc clowns spawning in a 2 gallon size space, and in a flower pot the female hardly fits in. IT CAN BE DONE! clownfish would spawn in a puddle if they had to.
what you'll need to raise clownfish would be, larval tank (10 gal or so), phytoplankton (live or dead), rotifers, air pump/stone/hose, lighting over the tank (up high), Clownfishes by Joyce D. Wilkerson.
that book will tell you everything you need to know. getting it right does take trial and error, or in other words, experience. expect to have few or no clownfish the first few times if it's your first time.
also, have a plan on where to unload your clownfish. also have a plan for culling unwanted fish. i plan to feed the babies with 3 eyes and an arm to a predatory fish that i have not bought yet.

My 0.02, joyces book is now 14 years old. It's not bad for background info, but if you do some more research on mofib or the clown forum or breeders forums you should be able to troubleshoot problems and get more new info. Good luck though! I just had to dismantle my little setup due to moving.

If the book is so outdated maybe Chad should write a new one

Matt wittenrich has a new book that is really good. Called something like marine breeders guide? I don't ever plan on breeding fish but bought it anyway and it was a good read.

If you ask a question that is answered in that book on Mofib you will however be directed to purchase and read the book even though it is 14 years old. And really not much has changed about the way that clownfish reproduce in that time :)

I don't feel the book is outdated. Of all the books I've purchased then sold, that is the only one I have kept.
That book is a great place to start and get a good sense of what it is going to take.
Your welcome to borrow it. If your planning to be at the swap, remind me to bring it. Take it for as long as you need but I do want it back.
