It figures - as soon as I move my pair out of the breeding system and into the "big" tank they will spawn. I don't know how I'll catch the male now! I can't be happier though! I almost sold these!
:stupid:
Looking for suggestions on how to remove the male, when to remove him, whether to let him keep the eggs, etc.

if your going to incubate them, pull after day 4 is what i've got out of my research.
incubate them in an artificial incubator made for cichlid eggs, you can find the DIY stuff for one online. i also have a few extra that i would sell at 20$ shipped.
i learned that they'll need to be incubated in a tank without detritus, as it will clog the screens of the incubator, or get entangled with the eggs causing infections.
or you could leave them and see if the male holds, if he does, you have the best daddy banggai around.

Congrats Kate! Glad to hear of the success :).

Thanks Chad. Maybe for this round I'll let him incubate and see how he does. He seems pretty relaxed except for the occasional harrasment from my cleaner shrimp.

Since it's the first clutch, I too would wait it out and see what he does with them. That will give you a better idea for the next round. If he were to hold the entire duration, just catch what you can. Should be pretty pedictabe when will get released.

The longer you wait the better.

I had bad luck with air-driven egg tumblers of the type I used when I was running the hatchery. It just never seems to work right. My incubation vessel was a tall glass vase with a rounded bottom, driven by a flow of water which was controlled with a needle valve. The net effect was a gentle, circular tumbling on the bottom of the vase without the eggs being blown out the top.

There are egg "cleaning" protocols out there using materials like Formalin or Hydrogen Peroxide that could help prevent infections / fouling.

Indeed!

Yes, let this first batch just go. I think most of the "holding problems" happen in small, overcrowded tanks that make the fish nervous.

important! though i think i've read that before day 4 and survival is terrible.

i tried your method first, and the needle valve kept getting clogged. i'd wake up in the morning and no flow to the eggs and half were dead. one lucky egg made it to 11 days before clogging finished it off.

When Chad pulled the babies out of the males holding at work, they were all little dudes already!

Star date 63755.4
Daddy Banggai is eating today. I don't see any babies (19 or 20 days since I noticed he had a mouthful). I'm assuming he ate them.

i like matts idea of hydrogen peroxide. though i used it for fesh water fish with an already low PH it did work to prevent fungus. i used it in the case that i wanted to see success rate with my discus and it turned out he was sterile(to my knowledge at the time, turns out you dont want to use rubbermaid pails for storing RO/DI)

gonna pull the eggs?
kbb0118
04-22-2010, 08:35 PM
Yup I'm going to pull them this time. He held for 19 days last time so I will probably wait 15 days or so. If he swallows them before 15 days I'll pull sooner the next round.
That gives me time to find a vase and all that jazz. My hubbie is building fish room shelves as we speak!!!!

Hey Chad - I've got a 6" tall shot glass and an aqualifter. Do you think that will do to tumble the eggs?

it's something you'll have to try out and fine tune. you'll for sure need to restrict the flow.
i think this is a better way to tumble the eggs, http://cgi.ebay.com/1-NEW-EGG-TUMBLER-AQUARIUM-TROPICAL-FISH-CICHLIDS-/160410446040?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item25593528d8 and i plan to make a few like this one sometime.

i used a siphon vacuum upside down with a airstone in the bottom. it would keep it floating and upright and the top stayed above the water in the main tank.

Yeah! I collected the eggs from the male. It wasn't as hard as I thought! I waited until he was asleep and catching him was really easy. I treated the eggs with a a dozen drops of Formalin 3 and they are gently tumbling in my super tall shot glass which is sitting on a flower pot in my QT.

I'm going to 100% disagree with you Chad...I tried Cichlid-Style tumblers that were air driven and they never worked for me. if there was ANYONE in the marine breeding world who knew how to use these it'd be me with my experiences using them to RUN A CICHLID HATCHERY!
Kate, I think you're much better off with the lifter and the shotglass. My only successful artificial incubation was done very similarly (you just put an in-line needle valve on the water flow to control it). This method was based off other, similar setups I'd seen that at the time constituted the ONLY successful Banggai artificial incubation I had seen prior to my own success.
I'm not saying the Cichlid type tumbler can't / won't work. I'm saying I had better luck and better control using water to create the circulation.

Shotglass and lifter seems to be working fine. The needle valve is wide open. It restricts the flow just a little still. All the eggs are pink still so things are looking good.
One little guy has broken off the mass and hatched. Seems a bit early for that (day 13 ish). The "yolk" is bigger than he is. It looks like Amie H's Day 15-17 photo (http://projectdibs.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14643&postcount=6).
