Good one china.

I don't find it fair to blame a whole country. I'm sure most citizens of china aren't happy with this either.

You cannot "Stray" out of shipping lanes without gross negligence. There is no way that a manned ship with people on watch can screw up that badly.

I was hoping someone would post this link, I read it today on the news. They gotta get some oil eating microbes out there ASAP.

The People's Republic of China executes more people annually than any other nation, (wikipedia)

We can only hope!

the catch with that is.. do we know for sure that is ALL they will eat?

Animals have caused great troubles when imported to do such a job. Once that job is done, the animals don't just go away. They "adjust" to the new climate.

This "mess" needs to be cleaned up asap and the boat removed. One thing I noticed.. 920,000 bucks is hardly a fine for a shipping company of that size. I say 5-10 million bucks with the $ from the fine going to the reef and it's restoration/preservation.

I SO wish this was the political sump. I will just say population control/socialized medicine.

I think there is no better substitute to oil eating microbes at this time.

I wonder where the coal came from

Map of the worlds maritime shipping lanes; notice how most of the shipping lanes pass through the worlds coral reefs (or currently designated habitats) ~ Hawaii, florida, India, Thailand, Philipines, Malaysia, Japan & ofcourse Australia mate. As long as global trade continues GPS or no GPS disasters are bound to happen. e.g. Valdez oil spill in Alaska, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exxon_Valdez_oil_spill

I hate this.
1 million fine?

Hmm no lets bill him for the reef damage on top of that.
Lets be fair and say like $5 an inch of acro he killed on impact and the rest from stress.
He's not going to pay it. and neither will china, unless they're trying to impress someone.
One would think someone in china tracks those ships via gps.

depending on the final fine it may go up for litigation & will be a matter of time when it will be 'settled' or even vacated. Sad.

It's kinda sad that the Great Barrier Reef is only worth $1 million yet we're willing to pay someone $20 million to play a game on TV.

That's too sad :0( I hope they get the "straying" fee of nearly $1 million, and then the clean up fee as well!!! I can't imagine the mess that made :mad:

I agree 100%, If the same amount of money put towards sports was going toward science, education and exploration the world would be a better place. :beerchug:
