What a stupid thing to do.......
But shame on the store for not having separate systems. Whether it be a contaminant or a disease, having everything on one system is a good way to lose it all.

From the article -
"Small bamboo sharks, lion fish and hundreds of rare shrimps were among the 700 exotic fish killed, along with endangered corals imported from Australia, Indonesia, Singapore and the Caribbean"
Maybe the imports of endangered corals/fish for commercial sale should be banned?
On a different note...if it was indeed targetted vandalism then the perpetrator would know where to look for the central "sump" on ALL systems.
This tells me there was indeed more than one set of tanks - "“That wall was the first to go, but they weren’t trying to kill just a few tanks.”"
Wow I feel like CSI :D

sad, sad, sad...... Would be a shame if it was a competing store. I've heard of it happening though.

With a system like that it was a matter of time before something happened. You need to seperate your lines they should know better. They get the epic fail for store design. Poor animals.

what if the owner did that for insurance claim purpose .
times are tough i tell ya.

That really sucks, I'm sad that someone could just kill everything so quickly and not even think twice about it.
On another note, I hope they had insurance.

I don't. I rather they not collect endangered species and put them at risk again.
To learn from their mistake, they need to lose the money. Just like one of us :beerchug:

Many faults to be found here.
One who's watching the place?
two.. I got a GREAT idea, lets build a huge, and I mean epic huge fish store.. and use 1 sump.. We won't have problems... right???
Three Don't open up shop next to 4 or 5 people in the same business...
I doubt insurance will pay for anything. Livestock is likely excluded.

you know, I was just thinking about this yesterday again...
what if it turned out he wasn't sabotaged at all? say some equipment malfunctioned and he didn't have a GFI outlet? I don't know exactly how much chlorine that could create (from electrolysis) if something maybe fell in the water, maybe it's a long shot, but who knows...

I think we're hanging too much weight on one word. I'm guessing it more of a poor word choice by a reporter than the actual truth of endangered corals. "Rare" perhaps, but I'm highly suspect that they were actually on the endangered species list.
Chlorine production through electrolysis with significant enough current that didn't trip a breaker, GFCI, or be noticed? Though possible, I'd think unlikely.
I agree with the multiple systems bit, but it's possible that they had multiple systems and the chemical was poured into all. In many shops, though separate, the sumps are lined up in a row making pouring bleach a simple task.
I'm not exactly sure how insurance would handle this. I'm pretty sure insurance wouldn't cover any of us if we had this happen, but I don't know how a business devoted to their livestock would have their insurance structured.
My guess goes to a wacko PETA-style person. They've been known to do some nutso things thinking they're doing "good". i.e. killing all the fish would ruin the business eliminating one store from perpetuating the exploitation of animals for money and amusement via unsustainable and questionable obtaining techniques. The killing of these creatures is an unfortunate sacrifice to obtain the ultimate goal (:gay1::gay1: I've known some wacko's and that's what they'd say)
I just realized how much of a downer I was on this post. Sorry guys :beerchug: I guess I'm being a bit too cynical tonight. More :beerchug: needed maybe :)

yeah, I'd agree, but I was just sort of thinking about how bleach isn't the only thing that smells like, or would contain chlorine, and then i started thinking about how chlorine is a big component of saltwater. I agree though, probably not very likely that that'd happen unless something went horribly wrong...
say it DID though...
I'd maybe more likely to blame it on sabotage than accidentally dropping a light fixture into a tank or something... lol

I don't think PETA would use chlorine though. Too cruel to the fish and inhabitants. But I could see them doing something to euthanize everything to shut them down. I couldn't imagine what they are going to have to do to get back up and running again.

You don't know PETA very well.. however i'd say if it was a group, it was likely one of the more radical groups ELF and the such.
PETA’s “Animal Record” report for 2009, filed with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, shows that the animal rights group killed 97 percent of the dogs and cats in its care last year. During all of 2009, PETA found adoptive homes for just eight pets.
