I have a frag of zoas that I got about 9 months ago. I think they are dragon eyes or something very similar to dragon eyes. So anyway, there are 12 heads on this frag and they open up very nicely, heads are nice sized too. But I just can't get them to spread. Water parameters are good and I think they are getting enough light and flow. They are sitting at mid level in my tank right now. I have tried moving them around every month or so to see if that helps but nothing seems to work.

If your water is to clean, zoas won't do as well. They actually like a bit dirtier water than other corals. Problem is with a mixed reef it is very heard to hit the spot where zoas grown and others do not suffer.

They might not be spreading cause you are moving them too much. I keep mine at the bottom of my tank. Do you feed coral food?

how many heads did you start with?

Try a low flow/dead area. I started with 6 and now have about 30 in the colony plus they are starting to pop up everywhere. I've had mine for about 9 months.

I've only moved them a few times in the last 9 months so that should have given them plenty of time to adapt. I feed them a couple times a week with phyto plankton.I can try moving them to an area with less flow

Some types of zoas depending on the location they're from can be slower growers. Down here there's some people that got these african blue zoas from our local guy and they only get a head or two a month for most people.

you should be thankful they are not spreading, they can be like weeds that you will never be able to rid your tank of if you decide to move in a different coral type direction. I had to scrub mine off of rocks when I started doing more SPS corals. Enjoy them, but keep them where they won't infest your main rockwork.

I'm hoping to place all my zoanthids on the floor of my 15 gallon when I restart it, as I'm going BB. I'd love a nice zoanthid carpet! Just gotta be careful when "vacuuming" the carpet so they don't get sucked up as opposed to "hardfloors"! :gay1:

Mine don't spread either, but they do flourish in their original little colonies. I keep a pretty clean tank and I've come to grips with that...
Although I agree that if they are spreading like weeds, it can be a real hassle to keep them under control. So far, I don't have that issue.
