I am looking to place a newly bought frogspawn in my 55g reef. I am running 4x54w t5HO and wondering if it is getting enough light being placed in the sand or should I move it up in the water column for higher light?

It should be fine in the sand as long as the light is not blocked by any over hanging live rock. I think with frogspawn as long as they receive direct lighting, they should be good. It's flow you should worry about. Too much flow can cause it to not fully bloom. I had my frogspawn in the sand in my brothers 72g bowfront with direct light from a 4 bulb T5 and that thing is growing like a weed!

coo. There are no overhangs or objects blocking the light. I have a 600gph koralia about 5in above it and a 1400gph koralia on opposite side of tank. They are both hooked up to a wavemaster

The best way to find out is to just test it and see where its most happy. Too much water movement will cause to not fully bloom and fully extend itself like mentioned before. Mine is placed in a spot where there is just enough flow too gently sway the tentacles. Once the lights come on its fully extended within 30mins. Its 4 heads the size of my fist. My hammer coral is 3 heads and the size of my fist too. The hammer sits about an inch higher on a live rock in the same area.

this is the hammer just inside of the frogspawn, it looks happier than frog.

The frogspawns mouths are all wide open, but tentacles pulled in. Is this normal?

It might not be happy or it might just be pooping.

The joys of poopin' through your eatin'-hole. (Or is that eatin' through your poopin'-hole?)

I bought two frogspawns at the last fall frag swap. I placed one in the sand on one half way up the tank. The one in the sand has grown significantly faster and, to me, has a better color.
