View Full Version : Any chance of returning?

I bought a frag of sunset monti at the swap on saturday and somehow its already dead (or at least as far as I can tell) . There's no chance that one of these could somehow spontaneously regenerate or anything... is there?
I dipped it in revive and blew on it with a turkey baster which made pretty much every polyp fall off the skeleton (and me very sad) .
I just can't bring myself to take the rock/frag out and throw it away...

eh, I've had a polyp or two survive when it seemed like the rest RTN'd. I'd leave it in the tank and see what happens.

I'm the same way. Sorry to hear about the troubles, and I hope that it turns around for you!!

Dipping an already stressed coral in revive is not the best idea. From my experience anyhow. I dip everything I get in revive, almost half dose and only for 45 secs to a minute. Everything seems to get knocked off just fine with it. Some acros like the ice/fire echinata and the ora Hawkins echinata almost never survive a revive dip (there are a number of threads on RC about it). But I am anal and still dipped mine, took 2 tries with the ice/fire, and the Hawkins I got this weekend rtn'd after the dip, o'well, I rather that happen then have an epidemic that crashes my whole tank. Dont know your system but perhaps a parameter is outta whack. Do you have any other sps? Montis in general tend to be the hardier of the sps.

I only dipped it because that seemed to help one of my ricordeas (plus, wouldn't fragging be considered stress? most people seem to use it during fragging don't they?)
I have a couple other SPS frags but nothing too extensive. Mostly monti digi, and a green slimer that looks to be doing great (got that this weekend too) .
either way, it seemed like it was more than likely already gone when I dipped it becuase the water i was dipping it in started smelling pretty fishy (like something dead) once I started blowing the polyps off with the turkey baster.
I haven't tested paramters lately because everything else looked fine, but I just did a water change last night so everything should be back to normal now if anything was out of wack...
update- I just got word from the seller that he's going to get me a new frag, so I just wanted to thank Zach/Nanofins for his generosity even after the misfortunes he suffered last week with his tank.
I'll probably end up turning this thread into a growout thread or something with updates on its progress (assuming the replacement is as faded as this one was when I got it at least... its more fun to watch something color up than just get bigger... Lol)

Yes. Check parameters something caused the death. Did u properly acclimate the coral? I also had bad experience with revive and acros.

Thats interesting about revive , I have been using CoralRX and had no problems with acros or chalices.
I actually dip in a stronger concentration than recommended and everything has been fine so far. I was going to get Revive next time around, I guess I will stick with the RX product.

Maybe I should clarify here. It wasn't the revive that killed it. I'm 99% sure of that. It didn't look alive in any sense of the word when i took it out of the tank. I didn't know it at the time however, to me it just looked like maybe it browned out or something , I put it in the revive and just the act of blowing on it with the turkey baster made the (already dead) polyps fall off.
maybe i started it in an area that was to bright, I'm not really sure, I did put it in a brighter spot becuase of my experience with a faded monti frag that I got from ray which responded great more light, and as soon as I noticed signs of polyps falling /dying off I moved it to a darker part of the tank, but it didn't help and within a day the whole thing looked dead...
I acclimated it the same as the rest of the corals I got at the swap though, and nothing else is even showing signs of trouble, including the 2 other SPS frags I got, so I'm not really sure what was up...
I'm thinking of maybe starting the new frag I get from him (assuming he still gives me one after this latest misfortune, if you're reading this Zach, really sorry to hear about your job, that's rough) in my biocube because its a lot more stable at this point and I KNOW that monti can/have been healthy in there, and then i can maybe move it into the fluval in the future once its healthy and well colored.
as for revive though, I've never had a bad experience that resulted from using it and will continue to do so because it smells nice and I have a whole bottle here. Lol
