I have a Nepthea that is developing a hole at one of its branches. Is this how they begin to split, or should I be concerned that it has a parasite or is being eaten or something?
I will post pics if I can get a good angle after work today.

For leathers, always use the feel test. Except for the very base where it might be hard, everything else should be rubbery. Also, if you give it a gentle rub on that area ( including the base ) if it doesn't basically start to fall apart and flake off ( chalky ) then likely just fine. If it does the coral is in serious trouble and likely will loose it all if you don't start fragging off parts that are still rubbery. For some reason this tends to happen to larger show sized colonies the most. By the time it you notice it, may already be too late as it happens from the inside out.

The coral still feels rubbery, I ran a soft bristle toothbrush over the "wound". Here is a picture of the hole. Don't mind the mini maxi trying to make babies in the foreground.
