I picked up a pump for my ETS skimmer and of coarse its to big so I put a gate valve on the output side to tone it down a bit is this ok? The pump is a pan world 50 xx or something like that 1100 gallons an hour. I had a mag 12 on the skimmer and I figured that would be close to the same amount of flow with this pump. OOPS no comparison. Well instead of getting a return pump and leaving it alone along came this nice pump for a good price so I had to upgrade of coarse:deadhorse: does it ever end? Probably not.

I would think that a gate valve would be any different than some head pressure. As long as you are not cutting the flow drastically, it shouldn't hurt.

What skimmer? I have a BL 55 pressure rated, 1100 gph on my ETSS 900

I think it is a 500?

An Evolution 500?? That's too much pump, major throttle back, they are recommending 500 gph through it......

I know over kill.

I know over kill.
I mean it could work but you'd need to throttle both the pump and potentially the air intake. Downdrafts take in A LOT of air with a properly sized pump, with an oversized pump even more so :)

In this situation overkill is no good. Pan it back alot or use somethign smaller

I had to tune it back. I took the gate valve off the output of the skimmer and had to put the gate valve on the output off the pump otherwise it just filled up the skimmer.

there are a couple of possibilities with DD.....both essentially do the same thing. Either put a gate valve on the pump, which throttles the water and air inputs to the skimmer, or put a gate valve on the air intake. I prefer the latter. You'll still have a monster skimmer....
