Recently I have acquired two yellow head jaw fish. One was purchased two months ago the other roughly a month . My question is how do you tell mail from female ? Right now there are strange things going on between the two. They used to have there own burrow on opposite ends of the tank, now there in the same burrow. Only one of them will come out to eat now for the past week and a half. I can see the others head poking out just behind the other under the same rock. I'm not sure if this is possible breeding behavior or just a jawfish that won't eat any longer. Previous to this they both pigged out on nutramar, enriched brine and mysis as well as rods. Any help would be great. Not sure if this is best spot to post let me know ?

not really any way to sex them, however it does sound like they are spawning. if they have spawned, I don't think the male will eat. still have not done this myself, ordered 3 to try out and the all died...

these jawfish will usually get along fine even if they are not a pair.

They are mouthbrooders. So, if they are in fact spawning you may be able to see eggs in the males mouth. Take some pics and start a breeding journal (http://www.tcmas.org/forums/showthread.php?t=29454) :)

Mail is usually delivered by the postal service and female is the sex of an animal. lol

Had to laugh at that WTF!!!!

lol

How do you know the mail man isnt a female that is also an animal? Ok that is going a little far im done!

Now anyways, sounds like they are doing something. Start a journal as mentioned and see what happens!

Out of curiousity have they been captive bred before?

yeah, not to difficult either. I'm just having a bad time acquiring a group...

if his pair is spawning, I'll be jealous :)

Hahaha he is a MAIL? Anyway......
will try and get some pics , which should prove challenging considering his location. I'm not sure about captive bred or not? I assume not, they were both purchased through Quality Marine. I will keep you informed!
