I have a approx. 3" roundish plating brown montipora, i know, lovely.

I am really not attached to this coral considering it doesn't look very good, its brown and im not really a monti kinda guy.

BUT

The other day i noticed it had some sand pushed up onto it, I reached in and re-positioned it, and noticed that there was a green(ish) brown(ish) slime going on where it was buried in sand a little. I tried to remove the slime and any other nastyness, then put it back in its spot in the back of my tank ()

Then yesterday i noticed that a different splotch was kinda gooey, blah blah blah, same process. Now it looks bleached in kind of a camo pattern (brown and white) on my monti... but no more slime.

Will the white part of the monti come back?
Should i break it up and frag the parts of the monti that haven't bleached out?

Once again, I'm not that worried about it but i should probably do something. I'll try to attach a picture at some point but as of right now i'm too lazy to fish it (:gay1:) out into a camera-phone-accessible spot.

WHATCHU THINK?! :brick:

If tank is mature and has good water quality it should regrow back over quickly. However in not ideal conditions ( high nitrate and phosphates , low alk or cal ), algae may quickly take root on the barespots which will gradually cause it to receed further.

UPDATE:

This monti has made an almost full recovery .... plus some!

When I got it, it was brown and not exactly attractive. .... the new growth, especially under actinics has an awesome green tint to it, and the polyps (although very tiny) are a great purple. The whole thing has almost transfromed!

Its ugly still with whites on, but its awesome with the blues!

The picture (camera phone 5megapixel) is really much more blue looking than it really is... but you get the exaggerated color, much different from the plain brown looking color it started out as...
