Is there a difference between a purple tort and a cali tort? They look the same. I'm also wondering if they are compatible enough to grow next to each other and possibly into each other?

"Most" of the time, the cali tort is labeled as the purple tort. You'd see a difference between the Oregon Tort and the Cali. Oregon is almost solid Blue/Purple.

Of course there are a lot of torts around. The most common is the Cali. I guess it all depends on what people consider the purple tort too.

If they look identical, let them grow near each other. Once they touch, you'll know if they have to move or not. They won't kill each other instantly. I'd try it.

I don't know, I think there were several threads on RC with one guy grafting two different colored M digitatas together.... I don't know if acros will do that, only one way to know :), I'd think they'd battle it out. I think the difference is largely color...

I've got one that was traded to me as a cali tort and is more pastel colored with some green sheen, while my ora purple tort is darker purple with a blue sheen. But then again, I can't absolutely positive confirm the cali is a cali but was traded to be as such. I know 100% that my purple tort is a geniune ORA as I bought it the day OD got them in.

ORA is kinda funny, The older torts they put out were much like the oregon tort, in the respect that they were solid blue/purple, whereas their newer ones have the green base with blue tips. I wonder if they switched to the cali?

MY ora tort was purchased November a year ago so it hasn't been that long. The Cali I got from Li/Clownnut in a trade. They are both in similiar postion is relation to light so while can be some variation not a real significant amount.

I guess, as Matt said, there is one way to find out! I'm going to place them about 3" apart so the have time to get established by the time the new growth collides. Should be interesting too see what happens.

I think you should make a time lapse video of it and use the fighting theme from 300 in the background.

Get the camera out!!!!

I wonder if the ORA is different. Their losses from the hurricanes that went through there a few years ago were significant. They are still having capacity issues with their stonies....FWIW, I have an ORA tort that I got directly from them back in June of 2005 when I went and toured their facilities, it's deep blue with some green sheen on the inner branches.
