I got some polyps that havent opened in a week since I got them and the closed polyps are turning translucent. Im thinking they expelled their light loving bacteria thus are pretty much dead. Thoughts?

Yes, I should have pictures but at work so ill post them later.

I'd say the odds are pretty good they are goners, but you never know. Did anything change that would have caused it?

Chances are that they are dying, however that does not necessarily mean they are gone forever. All you need is for 1 polyp to survive and the entire colony can come back.

For instace, a couple years ago I had a severe issue and WAAAYY too much Kalkwasser ended up in my tank. Killed all the fish and all the corals. I was too distraught to rip everything out and re-start, so I did really frequent water changes (to prevent smell from dead coral, really) and that was it.

A couple months down the road, all my zoas were goners, but ALL of my LPS, and softies came back fully, and my AMAZING pink birds nest came back as well! These colonies looked as dead as they can get. The birds nest was bleached and everything.

Moral of the story, don't give up! Sometimes you can save them!

I just bought them and they were shipped overnight. I dipped them in coral rx and then threw them in the tank. They never opened. Maybe the shock of shipping plus dipping brought them to their demise. Ill keep them in the tank since its only 5 polyps and maybe they will come back alive. I couldnt imagine they will release to much ammonia into the water if they are actually dead.

They are placed in a low/med flow area so they should get blown off a decent amt. Anyone know how much hair algae hurts zoas? Some of the new zoas are barely opening up and slowly growing hair algae on the polyps.

Do 50/50 tank water and hydrogen per oxide... for a 5 minutes. Take it out and put it back into the tank. Might have to do it for about three time.
