View Full Version : Gill Parasites
Is there any reef safe chemicals to kill gill parasites? Actually reef safe? I'm always sceptical of what is on the net and wondered if anyone has any experience with it(treatment method)... I couldn't find anything when attempting the search function.

What gill parasites are you trying to kill?
heck if I know... I assume they are flukes. I've got a bottle of 'Rally' that I've had for awhile and never used... says it's copper free and 'safe' but so do the rest of them.

No medication that is truely effective is reef safe. Your only option for treatment is to remove the fish and treat in a seperate system. If a medication claims to be effective, ask for the scientific proof that proves that it works.
so is there anything I can do to 'sterilize' my system other then leave it fish free for say a month (I heard most parasites can't live that long w/out a host)?

So I have been using a treatment for saltwater ich this week and have had some success. (At a cost) I have a Lawnmower, Jawfish and Blackcap Basslet with varying degrees of infestation. The tank is a 46g reef (mostly softies) so I wanted to treat the fish in the tank. (Too difficult to remove either the fish or the coral.)
I have been using Kent Rx-P every other day and Kent Poly-Ox on the off days. The fish are doing much better and all the corals are fine except the xenia. A few colonies started to melt upon the first dose of the Poly-Ox. Most of the others look pretty stressed.
It did not negatively affect mushrooms, rics, leathers, sun coral, frogspawn, fox, candy cane, zoos, polops (yellow?), or chili.
The Rx-P says that it is a "Parasite treatment for Marine Fish and most Invertabrates". The Poly-Ox is an "Organic Material Oxidizer", which I take to mean that it will start to chemically break down organic matter. I blame the Poly-Ox for the xenia loss.
Good Luck!
