Any thoughts? Yes, no, maybe? would be a sps dominant tank with a good mix of fish, including several tangs.

it is a niger that Troy has, cool. I thought it was but I could not remember. I was just asking because liveaquaria says it is not reef safe, and marinedepot says it is.....

They should be fine with corals. I think inverts may be a problem at times but you can always replace those. :)

I wouldn't risk it, but that's just me. :gay1:

I tried it when I had one, and yeah, it will work if you dont have any soft corals or inverts you care about. Maybe if you keep it really well fed?

As I understand if they are well fed they can be reef safe, but each fish has its own agenda too.

I already have a hawk fish and a marine beta that eat all my shrimp, so no worries there, I just will have to continually restock my snail population. I also have a powder brown tang who is fairly shy, do you think the trigger will harrass him? He is really the only fish I am concerned about, I know the rest of them will be fine.

There's a video on reefvideos by Greg Shiemer that talks about reef fish and invert safety.... I thought it was pretty good.

Did you watch the video on reefvideos.com? Did they talk about the Niger? No idea.... I've not kept them in a reef before. Sorry I can't help...

I had a niger that loved to eat the occasional hermit crab.

The Niger in my tank is so far a model citizen. I would say I have a good sized fish population and I feed them very generously. From what I have read the Niger and the blue throat triggers are mainly planktavores and should not mess with corals or inverts if properly fed. I've got shrimp and snails and corals galore and so far have not seen him mess with anything. He does try to take hunks out of my fingers when it is feeding time and both of my triggers are quite the pigs but as far as I'm concerned they both behave. I decided to try one in my tanks after reading some articles in advancedaquarist.com magazine and I believe it was Terry Siegel who had kept some non-typical interesting reef fish. If you want more information explore the back issues and read some of the articles by him...

One of these days we are going to see a video of a Toe-Thumbed Stucky T waving hot dogs in his tank.

The last niger trigger I had killed most of my lps, sps, and softies. Not to mention she kept dropping rocks on my anemone before it died:
