so how exactly does a fish trap work?
sounds like a good diy project.

more or less, its an acrylic tube, threaded at one end to insert food into. the other end has an acrylic trap door, tied to a string.
insert the fish trap in the water, they will smell the food at one end, swim into the trap to get to the food, and when they are in it, you let go of the string to shut the trap door, catching your fish without stressing the fish by chasing them.
they do take a great deal of paitience however.

I use a cheeseball container. I leave the top off and put food in the bottom. The fish swim in and down to get the food. Then I just reach in from the top and grab the container. The fish will never swim up at something coming towards them. They always swim down and to a corner and there they stay. Another cheap trap is a clear critter container. They have a small door on the top lid. I leave this completely off and place the food in the container. Many fish can't seem to figure how to get out. Others that do figure it out will still go in to grab food and then you reach in and get the container.

Has anyone ever tried a plastic milk jug before?

no, i havent.. however, if the paitience required for a normal fish trap is any indication... i wouldnt want to try and convince them to go down the skinny neck of a milk jug..

Any wide mouth upright jar works. The fish always swim down and away from a hand approaching from the top. I've caught a lot of them this way.
