View Full Version : Building sump and refugium
Hi guys,
I'm setting up a 75 gallon tank, and need some advice on building a sump and refugium for the system.
This is your standard 4' tank.
Here's what I was thinking... I have 37" to work with underneath the tank.
I've looked at a couple of ideas, not sure whats best.
1) 20 gallon tank for the sump, drills some holes and connect it to a 10 gallon refugium.
2) 30 gallon tank separating the sump and refugium with baffolds.
Does anyone know of any good DIY threads for building this?

Hey Nam I will be trying my hand at building my own sump and skimmer out of acrylic in my 20 gallon thread. I hope to start the sump this weekend or early next week and will be posting pictures along the way.

One idea that we were throwing out there was to use a drilled 20 gallon and 10 gallon joined together and have the overflow from the tank into a T-junction. This would allow half of the water to go into the 10 gallon (or 20, we hadn't decided) refugium and the other half into the sump-area. Has anyone done anything similar to this?

yeah, I reference his site all the time, I suggest his design using a 20 long glass tank, works great. cheap to make, get the baffles cut at ace hardware for like 7 bucks

Does anyone know a good store to get unusual aquarium sizes? For example, we called petco and petsmart and they had never even heard of a 29 gallon long aquarium.

I got a sump from glasscages by faxing them the design and they make the sump from the design. Shipping cost was not terribly expensive either. They have lots of different sizes.

I've done this, though I used a 40 gallon tub for the refugium. If you have room under your tank for one 30 gallon, I would do that before going with two tanks, a 10 and a 20. Just get some glass cut at the hardware store to seperate them. The plumbing and flow control is much easier in one tank, IMHO, than with two. I'd rather silicone in a piece of glass than deal with the two tanks again. I did it primarily because I didnt' have room for both the skimmer and the refugium underneath the tank, so I have a space behind the wall (and under the stairs) for the refugium.
