perhaps you can try that pink insulating foam board. Cut a piece matchinjg the footprint of the tank and put oit between the tank and the stand.

Pink stuff would likely work for very small fractions. The pink isn't going to compress enough on the low portions to make up that kind of distance and would still be adding uneven pressure. I'd probably use as many shims ( the non wood ones ) as often as I can. This is only after exhausting all possibilities for reworking/rebuilding the portion of the stand that is out of square. I'd probably build that portion of the stand again from scratch if necessary though before resorting to shims......

What about the tank square. Is it the cause ? I really don't know how much flex a tank itself can have.

No idea really. The existing stand had some molding around the bottome so you really couldn't see if there was an existing gap or not. I always assumed it was fine and didn't do anything special to the tank or the stand.

Menards has 3/4 inch white styrofoam sheets for very cheap. This should take up most of your gap if needed.

How did you check the level of your stand ? See if you can find a self leveling rotating laser level and check against all corners. That should give you the best readings.
