Yeah, that's too bad for sure. :brainoverload: I've used many of his pic as desktop backgrounds.

That said....I am not being critical, just curious. Or maybe thinking out loud. But I am kind of surprised that tap water was the ONLY option. I would think that a person who had designed that kind of system and has that kind of success would have had some sort of back-up plan that didn't include dumping tap water into the sump. I may be missing something here, but I'm not going to try and read thru 7 pages of "Oh I'm so sorry Steve blab blah blah......" to see what, if any other conclusion was met other than tap water + bad de-chloro tabs.

How long do you guys think it would have taken one of our clyb guys to round up 200gal of ready mixed saltwater ?

Even at 10pm I am sure a guy like Keith or Ed would open up the store to help you save your tank !

I agree with his thought on he should have just ran with his in tank circulation. 2 days away from a skimmer is not going to hurt anything and by then he would have had his water. I know if my return pump kicks the bucket my tunzes would have no trouble keeping the tank healthy for quite a long time. At least a week without problems...

I agree, with a system like that I would have been calling Culligan to deliver 5 gallon bottles of water...the cost would have been much less than the cost of the SPS loss.

Ouch, like he said he reacted without thinking it out. Pretty expensive decision.

Oh Wow. I assume his skimmers were outside the sump then?

That really sucks! I loved his tank.

run your ro/di unit without the membrane in it. At least the sediment and carbon would remove the chlorine and DI would be most everything else. The DI would exhausted after about 50g so you would go through several of them in 1 day but better than tap. Since I buy DI resins in bulk, I would have plenty to easily get me through.

I guess hindsight though it's easy to think of alternatives.

I am thankful he shared and was candid. Gives people the awaremenss and chance for you to think about it and have a plan prepared just in case it happens .....

I can see where on a large system have skimmer drain directly may be a requirment but on a small scale I really like that my collection cup is in the sump, if it overflows oh well, it can always reskim it out again.....
