I think that it may be the other way around, sound like a bristle worm may be have a clam snack. At least that is what I found one morning in my tank.

Nope the clam is now empty inside I wish it were the other way around...

And by the time I came back with the tongs the thing was gone is there any way to get them to come out?

bristleworms usually just eat what was dead/dying anyway. However, that being said, there is a nasty type of worm that is rarely seen in aquariums (another member here had one) that does eat clams among other things, so it is always possible, that you have that type of worm. Not likely, but possible. In any situation, I would get a worm that size out of my tank in a hurry.

Also the clam was fine when it was lights out last night it was opening and closing and reacting to the light....

I am unsure if it is a bristle worm or not I took a look at some ID pages and could not pinpoint mine this thing is off white and is about 1/4 inch think by about 10 or 12 inches and does not seem to have a head it looked the same on both sides from what I could see also it moves some what fast for a worm as I walked 3 steps and then came back and it was no were in sight..

I should also add that I have noticed that there has been something bothering my corals causing them to stay closed for some parts of the day I looked at my water quality and found that not to be the issue. I am moving tanks also so I don't know if I should worry about this or not as it seemed to be coming in and out of the sand and not the rock.

I'm sorry about your loss.

I'm probably going to get flamed for adding this, but isn't this the tank you just set up in November? Its 3 months old, you are new to the hobby, and you've already put anemonies (so far a condylactis anenome and a BTA) in it, and now a clam. Its just my (probably should be more) humble opinion, but if you keep rushing like this, you will keep killing animals.

The clam is the first thing that I have lost in my tank aside from I got one frag of a SPS that got necroses other then that it has been smooth sailing with only one issue so far and that was due to some one told me to mess with my DSB and it messed my water up big time..

The clam had been in the aquarium for 2 months of the 4 or 5 "cant remember" and has been doing great as well as gained a lot of color since I had gotten him.. So I do see your point but in my opinion as well as others that have seen the clam recently it seemed to be in good health and just fine and dandy.

You dont have to yell lol.

If you can isolate the rock its in, you can try dipping the rock in freshwater. But other animals will die/fall out too.

He didnt seem to go in the rock he was coming out of the sand when I saw him and I assume he went back in the sand and that is how he got away so fast

Without tearing the entire tank down and sifting through the sand you're not gonna catch it.

Ive seen a creature that looked just like a centipede, with a pincher for a mouth. it retreated into a rock that was close to the sand and it had made a spit-sand doorway. I havent seen it since. I didnt think to take the rock out when i saw him. Im sure its hidding underneith the rock

I duno my clam was in the open and not near any rock so I know it is something that lives in the sand I am turning the current tank that it is in into a fish only any how and will just sift all the sand b4 geting it going again

Clams, like anemones, can slowly die on you over time in aquariums that they shouldn't be in. That he seemed "just fine" or looked OK does not mean he was. To most of us, they very often look perfect before they die.

I tried that too, didn't catch the ones in my tank. My bristle worms look to be about 5" long.

Mine is doing well. I got him on 10/5. He has grown quite a bit in the 4 months I've had him. Looks like he is working on his third growth ring. He doesn't extend his mantel as much as he did before I switched from PC to T5s. I am guessing he doesn't need to anymore. Still looks perfectly fine though.

There are different types of worm/fish traps that are available or you can make. Put some food in and place in tank at night. Sometimes it helps to good like on feeding your tank for acouples days prior so the critters are more hungry. The larger the worm the hungrier it should be!
Sorry about your loss. Happy hunting.
