So I just scored a full time position after 5 years of college, and will be moving at the end of May. I want to upgrade my tank, I was thinking somewhere in the 60-90g range. Any suggestions for brand, size, lighting etc.
Thanks
Luke

It all depends on what you can handle and what you can afford. For that range I am a fan on the 75gallon tank. If you are handy and can build a canopy then you can do a 2x 250W metal halide retro pretty cheap. With that you can keep just about anything alive, or at leat fullfill their light requirements.
BTW where did you get the job? I hear Boston Sci. has been hiring bio. engineers for their pacemaker support.

I like 75s and 120 and of course the longer 125 if you can take it. I don't prefer a 90, its width does not warrent its hight.
If your set on 4' go 120!

Both those are awesome sizes... I have a 58 Oceanic if you're interested....It hasn't been used in a long time, but I had a lot of cool stuff in there.... oh the memories...

A nice splurge could be
-90 Oceanic Tech tank, reef ready, matching blk stand with 4 smoked glass doors, 2 on the front and 1 on each end
-Your choice of many 4' hoods made by Pfo or Aqua medic. Mh or hqi
-Euroreef Rs-80 protein skimmer
-Ocean direct live sand
-20/30 gal glass tank for a sump, with mag 12 return pump, also have Turbo sea pumps if you choose to go external.
-4 Maxi jet 1200's for internal flow, optional Aqua medic wavemkr or Tunze 6080's
A few other goodies could be added at bonus time:biggthumpup:

No. The layoffs were more administrative in nature. I'm referring to their engineering areas... poor quality work has got them in trouble. Their stent area though is good, just not what was previously known as Guidant.

Yeah, my old supervisor is a Senior HPLC chemist in the stent division.

BS did actually make an offer, but I turned it and two others down to work at ev3. Anyone here work there?
Anyway . . . . sounds like a 75 or 90 is the way to go for me . . . . I did make my hood for my 29 gallon, wasn't too hard. How much clearance is usually left between the water level and the bulbs is I went MH?. I think I only have about 3 inches with my PC's . . .

For MH id do like 12" clearance. I have looked at ev3, but its hard to move. I was offered a job at PACE analytical, but the day I went to put my notice in my company counter offered. Crappy job, but shipping is cheap and I got a raise.

You will likely find once you get it setup and running that you would really like to have that 24" width as opposed to only 18". Aquascaping options it makes a HUGE difference that's why 120g would be ideal. But if you think you will be satisified with 18", I'd go with a 75g over the 90. Tank is cheaper and less height makes it easier to light.
6-8" for most refelctors is enough space between the bottom of the bulb and the top of the tank. Anything more than that, you loose intensity. Only time, I'd go over the 8" would be it the water temps are too high or if light spread isn't adequate at that height.

i really like my 65 gal breeder. 36" long, 24" tall, 18" deep. in my opinion, it has the best dementions of the smaller tanks. (i really hate tanks that are 12 inches deep. *55g*!!!!)
of course if space and money permit, bigger is always better. i do enjoy the 120 and 220 sizes.

Reason why I like the 58g over the 65g is that while you do loose an inch or so in height from a 65g, you don't have a cross bar to deal with. So that becomes an advantage if you want to light with a single MH. Crossbar really limits that. Now if you only plan flourescents or to use more than 1 MH then the crossbar is a non issue on a 65g. Now Oceanic makes a 70g without a crossbar so if you want that extra height and still not have a crossbar then that would be a good options too but I don't really care for taller tanks that are still only 18" wide.

Whatever you decide, you can get the tank and almost everything else used from the club for way cheaper. May not want to buy things like ballasts and bulb cause you never know how old they are

starphire is a low iron glass woith a lower optical density, more clear, looks like acrylic.
