Dead rock or base rock is rock that has dried out and is no longer live**. Preferably it would have been scrubbed clean and cured before being dried, but that depends on where and whom you get it from. I can't recommend any LFS, but I know Max Seeley had a couple bins full of it when I bought mine from him. Just make sure to rinse anything you buy very well before introducing it to your tank.

** I have had numerous things pop up from rock that was "base" quality, including a small patch of miniature zoanthids and quite a few sponges.

Marcorocks.com is what you want.

Max doesn't have any left and the politics involved on getting a shipment of is very own is going to take a while....

Can you post pics or send them to me? I've got a BC 29 to fill.

That may be more rock than I can take. What is the rule of thumb for lbs/gallon of "dead" rock?

Really it's pretty impossible to dictate how much. Your aquascaping technique and how open you want your tank and most importantly how dense the rock itself is. The nice thing about the marcorocks stuff is it is extremely light for the volumne so 15 pounds of that could easily fill up the same space as 30 pounds of other types......

On a brand new system though I wouldn't exceed more than 50% of the total volumne of rocks with dead. Becuase you add too much dead at once and you have lots of surface area for hair algae to grow and can become a big eye sore. If your experienced and plan to combine with some mature rock you can exceed that but I'd never recommend for a novice who may have algae issues to overcome during the learning curve. In a mature system that has a healthy amount of coraline, likely seed much quicker than a new system.

If your buying dead rock i would cook it first ( it will help keep the ammnoia spike lower)

Two vendors locally have large amounts of the rock I got in.

Dirk Griffin (Redwing) and Sea Monkey (Plymouth) www.twopartsolution.com

I still have 2000 lbs. left, but my minimum purchase is now 200 lbs at $2.00/lb. Sea Monkey is selling it for approx. $2.60/lb - it is called Eco Rocks on his web site. I will be supplying him with a consistent supply of it from now on.

That reply about marcorocks.com was from back in March, when at the time you didn't know if/when you would get anymore in.........
