are hqi brighter than single ended bulbs?

the reason I ask is today I got a new light and it has 3 150hqi and my old light had 3 250watt single ended and the new light seems alot brighter?

It is entirely possible that the new one is brighter. It has more to do with par than anything, and most of the HQI lights are stronger than there SE counterparts.

I ran a 3X150hqi aquaspacelight setup before. When I put it on a watt meter each bulb was actually pulling just over 200w each. Plus with most DE setups having reflectors that focus more of the light in a smaller foot print. I can see where it may have an appearance of being brighter. Although like Mary says mentions, human eyes can play tricks on you and really need to have a light meter to actually measure it.

yeah like they said, it's all about the PAR of the particular bulb, if you ran some xm 10k's in your 250 fixture, they'd be brighter. and hqi's usually have better reflectors. But hey, brighter w/ less watts, why are you complaining?

If you have HQI, whatever the wattage they state is wrong! To find out how many watts your HQI fixture is going to pull, take the amps of the ballast and multiply by 120. My 250 watts HQIs are pulling between 360 and 380 watts ( PFO HQI are lower than Hamilton HQIs).

HQI are a lot brighter than mag or electric.... I don't know why they do it other than marketing purposes, to create the illusion of apples to apples, and to charge a premium for HQI.....

I also see that your old MH setup was a hamilton. As far as reflectivity they really aren't very good so likely weren't getting the most out of your 250Wers to begin with so that will also close the gap on appearance of looking brighter as well.

Wohooo!!!! 72x12x12
It looks like it's acrylic, is it?
And if possible, where did you get it from?

Many Thanks,
