I'm in the process of resealing a tank. While removing the old silicone, I have discovered that the back glass plate is chipped where it was cut. This was under the silicone and probably happened during manufacturer. It obviously held water for many years with the chip.

However, that happens to be the spot where the silicone was weak that made me decide it needed to be resealed.

Do I trust it, or do I toss this one and find a different tank?

How big is the tank?

Your options are:

1. Use the tank as is and risk a flood
2. Cut a new pane and resilicone
3. Order a new tank.

Its a 55. At a minimum I would complete the reseal job. The entire chip would be under the new silicone.

IMHO for as much time as you are going to invest, I would consider buying a new 55 because 1. It's fairly cheap to replace 2. 55 gallons of water is a lot of water on the floor. 3. The piece of mind of knowing you are safe.

Honestly, any used tank I have gotten, it takes me months to be able to sleep at night from wondering if it going to burst. Get a new one bro!

The guy I found on craigslist had a brand new 55 he would sell at a deep discount.

I'll start looking for a new tank. I have to be careful w/ 55's though because I don't think a lot of the new ones can be drilled.

I haven't heard about that. Are they using all tempered glass?

That's what I've read.

Interesting. The one for sale I mentioned before is AGA and a couple years old (although never used).

Sent him a PM this morning.

I'll look for morty's guy but I don't see myself driving to Richfield for the tank - if I am remembering the guys location right.

There's a decent chance I'll be meeting up with him tomorrow or Saturday to get a couple tanks. Do you want me to check the 55 for a tempered sticker and pick it up if it's not, or just the bottom is?

Chris
