If no algae film present, it could be by-product gases from fauna converting the waste.

Their is some algae film on the sand. That is what I thought was causing the bubbles.

What would take care of that algae? fish? snails?

Keeping close eye on your water parameters/quality, keeping nutrients low, exports high will solve.

Fish/snails or other critters is just a bandaid to the root issues and most will not touch this type anyways.

If it is pretty new setup to have this type of thing and will usually go away on it own with proper conditions.

It is in my 6 foot 40 gal which is plumbed into my other 150
It's been up for about a month so far and the problem is only in the 40 gal not the 150

Also pretty common if the sandbed is new and will likely go away over time......

Hello from Bethlehem, PA! Just two items: (a) I came across this old thread as I was reviewing my new soon-to-be home group of TCMAS, & thought I'd share a link regarding my own similar experience from awhile back -- just in case someone decides it might be helpful to others in the future. As you will see, I make no effort to hide my mistakes ;):

http://forum.marinedepot.com/Topic67648-13-1.aspx.

My own issue cleared up completely within 5 days of adjusting my high intensity photo period & adding a fighting conch, & my substrate surface has remained clean as a whistle ever since.

(b) After a 4-year absence from my home state of MN (grew up in St. Paul), my company is transferring me back to our New Ulm headquarters in about a month. Naturally, I been trying to reaquaint myself with my Twin Cities hometown, and was startled to come across this obituary:
