Looking for a wrasse to take care of flat worms.
I would like one that I could keep cleaner shrimp with.
Any ideas?

I know I have asked this before but this time I am about to buy one.

from what I've read (extensive on WWM) the thalassoma wrasses(lunar, banana, pretty much the gorgeous greenish ones with the pretty lines on their faces) wouldn't be good with cleaner shrimp. It seems like your choices are 6 line or yellow coris if you want a wrasse with ornamental shrimp that has a chance to take out FW. FW are a finiky thing, they can even change their palatability over time, so even if you get a fish that eats um, he might not always like um. I had some flatworms and I think I'm going to try to let them run their course and procede, maybe eventually I'll get a six line, but he's gotta be last of my stocking, what with the chances of being aggressive.

We have yellow coris, tri color, carpenter fairy wrasse, sixline should all be safe and have been acclimated for a good time.

And don't forget all wrasse can/will jump or harrass other fish to jump, so need to keep covered or if using a canopy put screening across the back so they can't get out.

Also note that while I had a sixline that kept them under control and have had others that won't touch them. Same with coris. There is no fish/wrasse that is absolutely 100% guaranteed to eat them unless you get the fish from someone who already knows it will. So mainly get the fish because you really like the fish, so if it doesn't go for them you won't be dissapointed.

I guess a wrasse wouldent be a good idea for my low pro tank (72"x12"x12")?

I second that one! SO- a sixline will not kill my cleaner shrimp????

I guess it's possibly if you have a really small cleaner. But once a good size, I've never had issues with cleaners with the smaller reef safe wrasses.

Thanks David, I too have been trying to figure out for quite some time too which fish to get and had decided on a mandrin as a result of the cleaner. Of course, I really wanted a sixline just that I didn't think it would be compatable with the cleaner. :greenguy:

my sixline and my cleaner were def. not friends in my tank but they tolerated each other enough to coexist.

My six-line just ignores my cleaner and coral banded shrimp.

We had problems when the display was being used for selling. At that time there wasn't enough hiding places for the cleaners and the wrasses would back them up to the overflows. Once we changed it into a display and added some rock formations, there was no longer an issue.

I never had issues with my 6line and cleaner shrimp. Shrimp were added after too.

good deal indeed.
I have a lunar wrasse.... he was the only fish that survived my crash of many months ago..
several months ago, i tried to put some cleaners back into my tank...

they were gone in 10 minutes. all i saw was the head and a few random antennae

hope he had a good dinner that night, as it cost me $30

yeah, I think the lunare wrasse is gorgeous, but I think they're a thalassoma and never get along for long with crustacions.

agree. I think the cleaners were probably more fun to eat than frozen krill though.

personal preference...
Wrasses are think streamlined animals ment for fast long jabs over distance... unlike say... myself or a clownfish...

Let me quote myself. "I personally would not...long term keeping".

Wrasses are more pectorally involved in locomotion, right? I figured a lot of their body shape was for getting into places where foodstuffs would be, and maybe if freaked they could use more tail power for a quick burst, but hopefully they wouldn't need that in captivity. I figured a 3-4" 6 line in a 3' tank would be acceptable, and that's my current plan.

My target for PH is 8.2, but I don't freak out when its 7.9. :) 3' could work, 24 nano could work too.
Anecdotal story for you:
We kept some wrasses in the "hallway racks". Those tanks are 24"x12"x8"H. When they were empty the wrasses did poorly, when they were full of rubble on the bottom, they did fine.

We had a 6 line in a 2' tank for a few years....a tank with plenty of rock and a sand bed. He did great, was fat and happy until he jumped a couple of weeks ago in a power outage.
This was an uncovered tank, so I guess we were asking for it.
