Maybe this will go well and fresh phyto will be available at meetings in the future. Cross your fingers....I have heard this can be iffy.

head over to www.talkingreef.com there is a couple of audio and video shows on how to culture phyto and rotifers. after I listened and watched all of that it looks pretty easy, but somewhat time consuming

There is also extensive information on culturing green water and rotifers in the clownfish book:rotflmao:

Phyto is thriving so far. It got nice and dark green and I split it so there will be a 2 liter bottle full in about 10 days! (assuming things still go well) Yay!

you may want to consider making a large phyto reactor to make that in. it will produce alot more phyto in a alot less time because it uses 100% of the light from the bulb. the design is simple to build and can make 2-3 gallons a week with a small reactor.

I am gonna double my batch one more time and then I am gonna start to test it in one of my tanks for a while to make sure it is all good first.
Have you try the recipe where you use plain tap water and add about 5ml of Miracle Grow to the Phyto batch. I think it works better then using tank water. There is a howto on Meleev's website and why he was using plain tap
water and adding the Miracle Grow.
About a year ago, I had about 8-10 soda bottles going and I didn't know
what to do with it so I simply turn off air pump and they all die and I threw
them away.

Actually what I did was got a fertilizer made for phyto online somewhere. Just seemed safer although it may be the same thing. LOL I have been using previously boiled tap water at .019 salinity in a 2 liter. I am switching over to 2 bottles today.

you can grow phyto in a very sunny window as well. i like to use cheese ball containers because they are about 3-4 gallon sizes and are clear like the two liter bottles.
i usually use 3-4 seperate containers incase i have a crash. all containers and rigid air hose goes through bleach between batches to ensure it remains sterile.
for the longest time, i had copepod cultures within my phyto cultures which when it came to harvest time for the phyto, i would end up with a coffee filter LOADED with copepods for my fish.
i also like to grow brine shrimp within some of my phyto cultures. they dont over consume the algae so it has little affect on your growth, and the algae is so dense in the water that the brine shrimp grow insainly fast and are already gut loaded for your fish to eat.
if you can have phyto available at some upcoming meetings, i would really like to get my cultures back up and running.

Steve, what phyto strain do you have? Did you get it from Boker420 or from one of those online stores that sells certian strains?

I got it from Boker, and am gonna start one with some DT's I will check with him and see what strain it is.

I was reading about using DT's. Some of the new stuff is like two or three strains and can be difficult cause one will become "over run" the other strains possibly causing problems or a crash due to the dying strains.
