Do most do this and if so what color and what kind of paint. I really dont like black that much. Some kind of blue or a dark purple maybe. Whats your thoughts? what have you seen and liked?

Ive always liked black personally, but the standard petco blue color is cool too.. To me black adds contrast to bright corals.

I think black looks best. Everything stands out better. I always thought the bright blue some people have looks a little on the cheesy side. That said, I've seen some really dark midnight blue backs that I think look pretty good.

I do prefer blue as well but most overflows are black so usually match the color and go with black. Years ago, there was blue background you can put on the back just like auto tinting but haven't found that around anymore.
Any latex paint will do. I use a foam brush. The first coat is very streaky, bascially just something so the next coat has something to hold onto.
Some use spraypaint but it's more messy IMO and prefer to do that outside but not always warm enough.

excellent i do have black overflow boxes so maybe thats the route. I am a male and am not affraid to say i have a thing for dark purple hmmmm i'l have to ponder it. I only want to move this 125 one more time outside and that will be to drill the holes so i better start thinkin.

Depending on how much work you want to put in, and how inclined you are to have a painted back, you can use spray-on foam, sand, and rock to make your own realistic DIY background. If you have your heart set in painting, ignore what I just said.

I've always preferred black to blue because it does seem to enrich the colors and contrast. Personally, I have nothing on the back of my tank because it sits up against a mirrored wall. But the black seems to be more striking, I think.
