do you have to feed them to get them to split?( grow, spawn whatever they do!) or is it all light?

i've read they feed mostly through nutrient absorption, not actual feeding of prey. I don't feed mine and they're doing great, but not splitting (I try to keep my organic load low and water quality high and they may not be fed as well). Also, they do like brighter light like metal halides as long as they are near the bottom of the tank. Mine definately looked healthier when i upgraded to hqis from power compacts.
